I've had tinnitus for more years than I can remember. It never bothered
me. I am a pretty relaxed guy. Today, I came home and as I was getting
out of the car I felt a sudden noise and then my tinnitus became ten
times louder in my left ear. Now I can hear it over house noises like
the frig, tv, etc. Before, I could only hear it when the house was
totally quiet. It sounds the same like before (a tone) but much louder.
My wife had a bout with tinnitus recently where her tinnitus (she never
had any before) abruptly appeared one day. The docs were kind of
useless with her so I won't even bother going in for mine. How common
is this "sudden" increase in noise with no external stimuli? Neither
she nor I had any encounters with a "loud" source of noise.
Thanks
Costas

Ya. thats happened to me only a few times but mine only got maybe twice
as lound. It went away within a couple hours. This is reported here
fairly often. You'd think, from the seeming randomness of these events
that there must be an environmental trigger. Was there a sudden air
pressure change? Humidity change? What kind of physiological change
can account for it? Were you listening to Rush Limbaugh on your car
radio? Al Franken? Heavy metal? Cant count out anything. Next time i'm
gonna log everything I can remember leading up to it. Gotta be some
clues there somewhere.

Absolutely no noise ( I rarely listen to music in the car ). The
weather was in the process of getting worse, in fact, it's been
steadily raining since yesterday. I was definitely stressed out with
family issues. One of the threads mentioned moving my jaw forward to
see if it made it louder and it did, so it's probably tension related.
It has since subsided but I can't tell if it got better or if I got
used to the new noise level (like I said I am a pretty lax guy).

My T just got worse yesterday. The temperature dropped about 30 degrees and
it rained that day. I think this may have happened before. I wonder if
changes in air pressure can make things worse.

Changes in air pressure make my tinnitus worse. It's gotten to where I
can predict rain now, as long as it hasn't rained in a long time.

Perhaps you are suffering from SADS. This is quite common and
depression is quite commonly related to tinnitus.

Could this be related to medication or any difference in diet / drink
etc ?
might be chemicals in foodstuffs that you're not used to or something
Hope it gets better soon

Thanks, I am not on any meds. I drink about 24 ounces of Diet Coke/day
and about 2 cups of coffee. I've been doing this for 20 years now.....

I've been under stress, and my T is flying high. I've been trying to
figure out a complicated crossword puzzle. As I concentrate on it, I
can't hear the T as much -- but the stingy sensation doesn't go away no
matter what. Our weather is supposed to change from sunny to cloudy.
Maybe that's it.

Common !
You've already had the stimulus and either didn't notice, or forgotten.

Could be seconds/minutes/or eternity...who knows. Usually it is only
temporary but I have had this happen numerous times in my 20 + years of T.
Try Xanax, it helped for me.

Somethimes this responds to low salt diet. Also try drinking distilled water
- has no salt.
