Have you tried TRT yet?
William Kaufman - 29 Jun 2003 17:49 GMT
Yes--I have tried TRT and have found it helpful for both of my
conditions--tinnitus and hyperacusis. I think that it does more than help
you habituate to tinnitus--I've reached a point that there are some days
when I can barely hear the tinnitus even when I concentrate on trying to do
so. This quiet mode prevails about half the time now, but is increasing in
frequency, so I'm hopeful that it will someday become the norm with
continued adherence to the TRT protocol. So I'm convinced that, beyond
habituation, there is some kind of "retraining" of the auditory nerve or
some other neural mechanism that actually somehow deflects the tinnitus
signal. All this is poorly understood, but in many cases--although not
all--it seems to work. There are no guarantees that it will work in every
case, however, so you have to do your own cost/benefit analysis when
deciding whether or not to undertake it. There are many treatment centers
around the country--but the two leading treatment centers are in Atlanta at
Emory University and in Baltimore at the University of Maryland.

I am a musician and producer . . . . most of the time tinnitus doesn't
bother me but sometimes when I play too loud for too long the T get could
with new sounds . . . . that bothers me !!   . . . but TRT can't help that .
. . I just have to make sure not to play too loud ( though it's dammm hard )
!!

70 dB should be ok

You're right--the degree of instrusiveness of one's tinnitus should be one
of the factors weighed in deciding whether or not to undertake TRT, given
the time, expense, and uncertainties that attend the procedure. Tinnitus
wasn't the main factor for me--it was the hyperacusis. But for the others
the tinnitus might be bothersome enough to be the deciding factor.
