Hi All..I'm new here. I recently have been suffering with ringing in my
right ear. It started about a month ago and it sounds like a loud tea
kettle whitling. For the first week it started, it was so loud and
constant, accompanied by headaches. Now I have ok days when its kind of
quiet, and other days when it's so intolerable. I have a hard time
consintrating on anything lately,(my job, hobbies ect.) but the ringing in
my ear. I recently went to a specialist (ENT) and they could find nothing
wrong. I am going for an MRI on my head, just waiting for the appointment
to be scheduled. I feel so alone lately and just want to curl up and go
away. My husband isn't much support, he tells me to just deal with it. I
would really like the chance to be able to chat "live" with someone else
who suffers from this. I have yahoo im and aol-im if I can get someone's
interest. Talking with someone else who suffers would help me so much! I
have done some research on the internet and I know there is no cure for
this. I just can't imagine having to live the rest of my life with this
ringing and I'm only forty. If there is anyone who would be willing to
help me cope,to help me deal with this better, please send an e-mail to
countrygirl01507@yahoo.com.  I would really like to hear from you -
Thanks! Colleen :-)

Murray,

I recently found out that my on and off again tinnitus for a year or so
appears to be induced by eating too much aspartame. After quite a while and
having doctors not finding anything besides saying that comes with age, (73
years old), I went on a diet of mostly protein and some fats with some
complex carbohydrates.

After a few days, everything quieted down except for a low tolerable level
of hiss. After a week, I started adding a few things (as a poster earlier
suggested, and thank you).

I thought it was sugar induced, but after having a few chocolate bars or
after indulging a lot of a cheese pizza, tinnitus still remained quiet. I
had a double scoop of 'no sugar added' ice cream, and within 12 hours, the
tinnitus took off like a raging bull but ended after a few days. It came
with blood pressure spike and a low grade headache. It was 'no sugar added
ice cream' but loaded with aspartame. (I suspect that it took the few days
to leave my system.) My family doctor suggested it could be lactose
tolerance problem which my age group often develops.

I experimented further and confirmed that aspartame to me is a major
contributing factor that triggers tinnitus, at least in my case was eating
excessive aspartame.  Aspartame is easily available in sodas, coffee
sweetener, sugar-free candy all of which I would eat to replace sugar in my
diet.  Now I eliminate aspartame as much as possible in my diet and think of
it as a poison to my system.

I don't know if that is of any help to you, Murray, but that is my story and
may give you some thoughts about what might trigger tinnitus.

formaldehyde from 11% methanol part of aspartame or from red wine
causes same toxicity (hangover) harm: Murray 2006.05.24

Dark wines and liquors, as well as aspartame, provide
similar levels of methanol, above 120 mg daily, for
long-term heavy users, 2 L daily, about 6 cans.

Within hours, methanol is inevitably largely turned into formaldehyde,
and thence largely into formic acid --  the major causes of the dreaded
symptoms of "next morning" hangover.

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol -- 1,120 mg aspartame
in 2 L diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg
methanol (wood alcohol). If 30% of the methanol is turned
into formaldehyde, the amount of formaldehyde, 37 mg,
is 18.5 times the USA EPA limit for daily formaldehyde in
drinking water, 2.0 mg in 2 L average daily drinking water.

Any unsuspected source of methanol, which the body always quickly
and largely turns into formaldehyde and then formic acid, must be
monitored, especially for high responsibility occupations, often with
night shifts, such as pilots and nuclear reactor operators.

Perhaps the source of your tinnitus is in your head or nerve.  Visit
the best neurologist you can find and afterwards go for a certified
accupuncturist if none of the fancy doctors works.  It was an
acupuncturist that took care of my head's discomfort, and reduced my
tinnitus.
