Roaring Tinnitus during sleep.

Very occasionally, I have a loud roaring 'white noise' sound which
comes around suddenly whilst in a state of sleep or semi sleep ,  The
intensity is what I consider overwhelming and extreme with both Ears
being affected at the same time, the effect is similar to a feedback
loop where the white noise just appears to feed back on it self
becoming louder and louder which makes me move out of a sleeping state
to a more awake (semi sleep) state where it then dissipates, however as
soon as it abates, I often move back into a full sleeping state and the
sound comes back and process repeats until I managed to actually fully
wake myself up, then the loud roaring sound completely dissipates.

This particular episode of tinnitus ONLY occurs during sleep and semi
sleep, and have to date never had it when I am in a fully awake state.
Although occasionally I do get a very mild faint cricket chirping sound
in my right ear whilst fully awake.  The faint cricket chirping has
been around since I was very young, may be 7-9 years old and the
roaring tinnitus first emerged when I was around my mid teens,  I'm now
in my early to mid 20's

I have Been to many doctors over the few years, and all of them were at
a lost to explain what was happening.  Any clues as to what is
happening here?  Also What I am more worried is this loud tinnitus
actually feeding back to my ears and causing damage or is this just in
my head only?

I think it's in your head. What you describe happened once to me. Since
then I have had a low grade tinnitus. I guess I have habituated to it,
because it doesn't bother me anymore.

It is because whatever that caused your T got healed over time in the
process.

And you know this how?

Given that I still have the tinnitus, your healing idea doesn't make
sense. I have chosen to ignore it. The actual cause may have lessened
somewhat; I don't know, but the tinnitus is still there if I choose to
listen to it.

The actual cause is there but the symptoms have diminished.  Whatever
caused your T has been recovering over time.

That doesn't make sense, but we know I don't understand English, so that
probably explains it.

you understand English well but you have chosen to say something for
the sake of saying it.

Then what you wrote does not make sense.

Apart possibly from the faint cricket-chirping, I don't think what you are
describing is 'tinnitus' as such.  I too have noticed this 'roaring' effect
on occasion and put it down to one of the mysterious changes which occur in
the brain as it switches over to sleep mode.  Once I became quite worried
about this - I felt the 'howl-round' might 'burn my brain out', so I
regained consciousness without delay to stop it !!

It's interesting to note that when we're asleep we become effectively deaf
to non-significant sounds. If you have a fan on in the room try remaining
aware in the last moments before dropping off and you'll hear it fading out
(then fading back in again as you pay it attention). This cycle can repeat
time and again, as you fall almost asleep then briefly awaken, like an
oscillation.

It looks like this might be what's happening in your case.  Maybe your
effect is triggered by the mild natural "tinnitus" noise everybody has.  I
remember noticing this noise as a child, though it was nothing like the
genuine tinnitus I acquired at the age of 52 (and now much better I'm glad
to say - but that's another story...)

Might be related to neck position when lying down. Also there is a condition
of increased cerebral fluid pressure on lying down.

In that case, will a chiro pillow, or a wrapped tower, which supports
the neck, help? TIA

Were I you, I'd consider myself blessed that it goes away when awake.
I'd venture to guess that most people who have T know that the sound
never leaves. At least we know that for as long as we hear it, we're
alive and kicking. As a corollary, I'm not sure that I'd like to know
my existential state were the sound to go silent.

Typhoon,

I'm also suffering from tinnitus...quite loud, and changes pitch all
the time, along with clicking, buzzing, metallic sounds..all kinds of
weird stuff.
If the doctors say there is nothing wrong with your ears...it's
probably in your head...like mine, which is why there probably won't
be a cure. People have even had their auditory nerves cut..and still
had ringing..which proves it's in the brain.

Anyway, hearing aids have helped me dramatically. I drink a lot of
coffee...hasn't made any change..some people says it will make it
worse.

Unfortunately I think this is a long time problem.  Not even sure
anyone is working on this.  Millions experiencing the same problem..I
know lots of people with ringing.

Hang in there...try hearing aids if you are having problems
understanding people..especially high pitch sounds. Digital hearing
aids will compensate for your loss.
