Audiologist Test

I dunno folks.
I just saw an audiologist a couple hours ago. She put me in the little
room with headphones and a microphone and sent strange quiet sounds at
me. I pressed a button when I heard them.  It was the same test she did
2 years ago when I went in for my hissing hears.  The tests showed that
my hearing is about the same as in 2004, showing normal readings for a
50 year old, and a little drop-off in the higher frequencies.  Left ear
is a little worse, prolly damage from a shooting outting 21 years ago.
I wasnt wearing ear protection.
The audiologists says that getting Tinnitus is a normal part of hearing
loss as you age.  She acknowledged that there could be non-normal
reasons, but they would be very rare.  She said there are no new
treatments, etc... She didnt think an appt with the ENT in her office
would do any good.  I left that nationally recognized hospital feeling
pretty bummed.
I'm almost, just almost, pretty near, maybe, possibly considering,
going down to Chinatown and finding some of that QI JU DI HUANG WAN
herb Poon keeps harping on. While I'm down there maybe get a nice neck
massage.  The doctors at my clinic just dont seem to take T seriously.
I have a very real, moderate volume, constant hissing in both ears.  I
habituate it with some success but it is alway there.

She sounds very stupid and uninformed.

It will always be there, unless you find a cause, like hormones,
infection, dietary, to treat.

Jim, the biggest step in dealing with tinnitus -- IMHO -- is realizing
that you won't find a doctor who can make it go away.  You can look
carefully for a doctor who will listen to you and treat your symptoms.

I have Meniere's -- or maybe it's endolymphatic hydrops -- or maybe there
really is no difference between the two.  I have pretty loud tinnitus,
hyperacusis, vertigo, and a slight hearing loss that sounds similar to
your hearing test results.

I don't think a hearing test really means anything at all to a tinnitus
patient.  I know they can figure out how loud your tinnitus is, but I see
no use in knowing the decibel level.  Seems to me that would only make it
more stressful to know any given number.

I went through CAT scans and MRIs and ENGs, for God's sake, to rule out
all the little evil things that could be growing in my head.  They were
all normal.  Nothing shows up, except on one test called a posturography
(or something like that).  All that showed was that, yes, I get dizzy when
they move the little platform I'm standing on.  The ENG test measures the
movements in your eyes as they squirt cold and then warm water in your
ears.  It was all pretty useless as far as I'm concerned.

The only thing that really helps is a caring, compassionate doctor who is
only interested in treating your symptoms and making you feel better.  I
found that in 1995.  I am NOT pushing drugs, but I do take a low daily
dose of xanax.  It reduced the volume of my tinnitus, and it pretty much
completely stops the hyperacusis.  There are still certain sounds I just
can't tolerate.  I will become nauseous if I'm exposed to certain
squealing sounds.

I did try one sorta outrageous Chinese remedy -- Kombucha.  It's supposed
to act as a panacea.  I got this ooky looking mushroom from my sister, and
I brewed the tea.  I gotta tell ya -- my ears had been plugged up and full
feeling from day one.  I drank 1/4 cup of this tea, and my ears cleared up
within 3 hours.  They remain clear to this day, even tho I only drank the
tea for about 3 months.  I understand kombucha is a tad dangerous and has
many warnings attached to it.  I think they sell it in pill form now.  I'm
not telling you to go out and try it -- just putting one more alternative
remedy out there on the table to be discussed.

Ducking now in case I've stirred up a hornet's nest....

See,  that always cheers one up... to know other people have it worse!
At the same time I'm sorry for your travails, much more than what I've
had to deal with with my apparent simple T. It's great to read about
the alternative treatments people have found. I've pretty much
exhausted traditional medicine with my health provider. They dont seem
to want to run any additional tests. Thanx for the story of your
encounter with the mushroom and xanax.

Jim,

Your next step is to be in contact with Eva so that she would direct
you to get some Chinese remedy -- Kombucha....and try.  If in a week's
time, you feel nothing, then drop it.  It is as simple as that.  From
the way it sounds, it is a kind of tea as the sound
'cha' is tea.

Ummm, I'm not going to "direct" anybody to do anything.  I just told my
story.

Upon request you would..I suppose.  After all, when the Chinese were
using these herbs to treat all sorts of difficult ailments thousands of
years ago, the forefathers of drfrank used to dance around camp fire in
the dark forests of Europe and did so without wearing pants...LOL

You're welcome.  It does help to know you're not alone.

Eva,

Perhaps you can tell drfrank or Jim Chinnis to bring this Chinese
remedy -- Kombucha to a hospital and have a controlled study done on
it.  It will be interesting!

Read the current issue of Time magazine. "Teaching Doctors to Care".

Doctors are not trained to be caring and compassionate.

That is what  they say to every T patient to cover up their ignorance.
Yes, just go down to Chinatown to get some of that herb pills and you
may even get some benefit out of it.
