I hit my head one week ago, and since then have had symptoms that lead
me to believe I've got Benign Paroxysmal Position Vertigo.  Dizziness
upon repositioning my head, especially lying down on my right side, and
then also when sitting back up.  Can anyone give me some GOOD news
about this syndrome?  Does it go away?  Some say yes, some say they've
had it for up to 8 years, or MORE... Some say it went away and then
came back occassionally.  This scares the daylights out of me, I'm
completely stressed out and losing my hair, and I DON'T have insurance.
I think it's pretty obvious that I've got BPPV, but the therapists
I've contacted won't take me without a referral from a doctor, which I
also don't have.
I very much want this to go away, the sooner the better.  Should I suck
it up and spend some of my rent money on the Epley maneuver, or is the
home method and/or Yoga enough?  or should I not do the home remedies
because it might get worse?  It's making my job difficult, and good
god, sex seems impossible for fear of nausea!!!  absolutely horrible.
If anyone knows of anything in NYC, please, PLEASE contact me asap, I
really need some help with this.
Thank you in advance for your informative response,
Erin

I'm not familiar with the syndrome as you describe it.  When I 'caught'
vertigo several years ago I was laid out for several weeks feeling very
nauseous. The positive part of this was that I was very tired and light
intolerant so I spent most of the time sleeping.  Any slight movement
brought on the nausea and for a good while this looked like being a
permanent state, however it did get better and now I only get a slight
sick feeling, but very rarely.  As laudable self help is the first step
for me is always to see a doctor.  I found that a simple exercise as
walking in the fresh air was the best way to alleviate the nausea.
Hope this helps.

If you have BPPV, it is usually easily treated. You have to see someone
familiar with the Semont/Epley particle repositioning maneuver, and you may
have to repeat it, but it is simple, is done awake in a doctor's office, and
usually works immediately.

Erin,

A friend of mine once got vertigo but it went away after six months.
His recipee was weight lifting by his hands while lying down flat. He
was taught to do this exercise by a professor at the University of Hong
Kong.  The purpose of doing the exercise was to improve blood
circulation of the body but that of the head in particular.  At the
same time, he took a tablet of gingko biloba to improve the blood
circulation of the head.
