Hi

I've created a new website and forum for tinnitus suffers and
supporters.  I myself am not a sufferer, but have two close people
in my life who have sufferer greatly (my brother and my best
friend.), and have seen first hand how debilitating it can be.

Please check out the site, http://www.tinnitus411.com join the forum
http://tinnitus411.com/forum , share your story. Through
sharing knowledge and experiences we can help each other eleviate
symptoms and stress.

I've added a Treatments category on the forum... Please let me know
through the forum if you have a treatment I should add. I'd like to
get an organized list going of treatments and have discussions on if
that particular treatment has work or not.

Also, if there is anything else you would like to see on the site,
please let me know.

Thanks and best wishes,
Hope

That's a commercial site with links to advertising.  No reason to leave
here for there, except to line your pocket.

HI Susan-

I've decide to remove the advertising except for sponsored listing as
you see here. The site is new and it will be a valuable resource for
tinnitus sufferers.

There are no advertisements at all in alt-support-tinnitus.

Hi Jim-

I have to disagree with you on that...  Look in the upper right hand
corner.

I have no idea what you are doing, but you aren't using a newsreader to
access Usenet. Maybe you are on the web, using Google to see the partial
database they keep of Usenet?

Many ppl prolly use Google Groups to get their alt.support.tinnitus.
It offers niceties that newsreader progs dont have. In return, you lose
a narrow strip on the right hand side to adverts.  ==>
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.support.tinnitus

The newsgroup format has certain limitations in how it can provide
data.  Basically it's a giant text library of random topics and
information loosely based upon a central subject. Yet, there is no
table of contents, no index.

I think Hope is trying to provide a means to better focus on subsets of
issues within the Tinnitus subject. For instance, there have been
hundreds of touted cures, remedies, treatments, and resources presented
in this ng. The newsgroup format makes it is extremely difficult to
keep track of them all much less their effectivness. This situation
just serves to promote the continued sales of worthless products and
services. Since people cant find information from consumers of these
products and services,  they just wind up having to try them. What a
waste. The Forum Hope has provided, if used, would go a long way to
change this situation.  I am not opposed to the modest use of Adverts
to support such a service.
Possibly, there are those who use this newsgroup to promote their own
'T' services so would prefer to discourage the use of other T resources
that may shed a light on the effectiveness of their services?  I hope
not. Knowledge is power.

I also think Hope is trying to provide a useful website on tinnitus. The
USENET newsgroups were really meant as a place to have open exchanges on any
topic imaginable, but the exchanges were not expected to have an index, be
searchable, or even be preserved. I like USENET because of its unfettered
nature and the power of the newsreaders to get the groups exactly as you
want them (such as with killfiles). Google and other web-based USENET access
interfaces I have played with or used in the past defeat both of those
goals. So I am much in favor of both USENET groups and web-based tinnitus
discussion groups and resources.

There are already quite a few, but I don't know of any that are independent
of a particular treatment provider and that are truly searchable and
indexed. There is a very large, active, and independent tinnitus website at
http://p080.ezboard.com/ftinnitussupport92262frm1 but the search feature is
worthless and there is no index of any kind. There has been an attempt to
list all treatments and peoples results from them in one thread pinned to
the top of page one. I post there and, much less often, here.

No one has ever really succeeded in selling their tinnitus product or
service here. Some of the purveyors of magic potions have tried, only to
disappear after a bashing.

That is a nice link, to ezboard. I was unaware of an active forum on T.
Can you provide your other favorite links here Jim?  Thanx.

Sorry. Not really. There used to be several ex-ast people who ran tinnitus
boards, but I think they have all closed, for different reasons. I think the
largest board other than the very active and large ezboard one I cited
before may be one on YahooGroups, but it may have faded by now.

Thats ok. There are over 400 active, registered internet domains out
there that contain the word 'tinnitus'. It's a real zoo. Prolly 95% of
the sites are Adverts & spam traps. I'm always looking for good T
website links.
Elly Byrne - 23 Apr 2006 21:33 GMT
He is looking at the website. Get with it, Jim.

I applaud your desire to help your brother and friend with their T.  In
addition, the creation of a forum with a treatments category is a great
idea. It would be cool to better organize all the terrific bits of
information of the type that fly thru this newsgroup.  That will
obviously have to be done outside of this newsgroup.
However, I think you will have an uphill battle attracting people to
your website because it exhibits a level of commercialism that will
prolly turn many people off. You must first prove the sites usefulness.

HI Jim-

Thanks for your comments.  My thoughts exactly on better organized
information.
It is new and I'm working on it... it will as it always is an uphill
battle in driving attracting traffic.
I'm going to tone the "commercialism" down.
