Pulsating Tinnitus and Palpitations

Hello to everyone! I am new to this group and look forward to sharing ideas
with you. I have been suffering with heart palpitations for almost 2 years
now and have been learning to deal with them, but now my pulsating
tinnitus that occurs in both ears is so loud that I can hardly sleep at
night nor concentrate in the day because of the  drastic increase in
whooshing/whistling sounds. I did have and still do have what seems to be
a sinus infection for a few years now, and have used a sinus irrigator
last year for this problem. I am worried that I might have done something
to my ears from possibly using this irrigator the wrong way!! Perhaps I
held it the wrong direction towards my ears, or pressed the end of the
unit too far into my nose while irrigating? Could this possibly cause my
drastic increase in  tinnitus and pulsating tinnitus levels?? Or maybe
this increased tinnitus is fluctuating hormone levels since I am
perimenopausal? Please I need your help and comments! Thanks so much,
Dianne

If you have come to this group to ask about pusatile tinnitus -PT -
then I assume you have already seen your doctor about this, and he
found no reason for it.

If you did not see a doctor, please do that first. What is happening
about the palpitations?

If a doctor cannot find a reason for the PT then it is a muscular
tension problem in the neck and/or shoulder muscles.
There is initial information at http://eebee.net/pt.shtml

Thanks for the info. Elly. I have gone to doctors and they are at a loss
regarding this pulsating tinnitus. I was offered an MRA but heard that
these are only indicated if the pulsating is on one side of the head. My
pulsatile tinnitus is on both sides, so I passed on the offer. Regarding
the palpitations, I am chalking it up to hormone fluctuations. Have gone
to a cardiologist this past year and he diagnosed me as having a "rapid
resting heartbeat". Somehow I feel there could be a  possible link here
between the two symptoms. Although my pulsating DOES get louder when I
turn my head either direction, or press on the muscles in my face area, so
am thinking it may also have a TMJ factor too.Has anyone had any experience
or success regarding their tinnitus with the NTI Tension Suppression
Splint, or with any other type of splint therapy??  Thanks! Dianne

Ive endured double sided pulsating tinnitus for eight years.  The
medical profession can do nothing to aleviate my condition, so as you
can imagine,  I have pursued all avenues in alternative medicine
seeking relief.  Homeopathy did nothing for me, neither did acapuncture
or Chinese herbal medicine. Spasmodic relief was obtained from neck and
shoulder massage, but long term diminution gradually came from
following relaxation excercises, e.g. controled breathing, muscle
relaxation etc.   I still have the condition of course but I feel that
I now control it, rather then the reverse.

Thanks Lawrence for your information. I believe that I too will have to
learn some relaxation techniques. Perhaps Pilates exercises? Has anyone
with tinnitus had any success with an Osteopath?  Also, what did you do to
try and maintain some sort of sleep? I am getting 1 - 3 hours of sleep a
night for many weeks now as the pulsating tinnitus keeps me wide awake,
and this is really exhausting me.  Dianne

Some folks keep a white noise machine or radio tuned to static in the
bedroom for masking, or set the radio timer to a talk station to turn
off after they're asleep.  Some folks take Xanax or Ativan, some
antidepressants that help with sleep and with the anxiety reaction to
tinnitus.

Some folks have posted in the past about help from learning self hypnosis.

If it's any consolation, I know how you feel. I go to bed normally about 2
am and finally fall asleep at around 6. I'm then screwed for the following
day.

I saw an audiologist from the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital
here in London today, who leant me for a month a "WELLCARE" machine that
will play me white noise, brooks, rain and waves to see whether that helps.
If it does, I'll report back.

Hi Dianne,

Glad to hear that someone makes their own decisions sometimes. Things
like MRA (is that the same as MRI?) only result in scaring patients
witless and usually produce nothing worthwhile. Their main use seems
to be to rule out something dangerous - which most of the time there
isn't.

Now Lawrence has found a certain measure of relief through massage and
relaxation. That confirms the muscle theory. So perhaps you could also
go and have an initial massage to relieve it in the early stages. Then
go on to doing the neck stretches.

Then ask yourself - What is happening in my life that could be setting
up this tension in the neck/shoulder muscles.

Can you tell us what you do for a job? computers? Telephones? etc.

Hi Dianne
I read your description above and was elated to hear your symptoms,
sounds crazy but you described exactly what I have.
I am currently seeing a neurologist and undergoing some lab tests for
anemia, thyroid and some sort of cranial pressure
your description of your symptoms are identical, I have had this since
first week of jan/06. especially your description of turning your head
and pressing on face muscles. all the doctors I have saw ( I think 7
now) do not know or ever heard of the pressing face comment.
I now have also the heart palpitations and seem to be getting weaker
and more tired, or is it just more stressed each day. I too am
postmenopausal and had a complete hysterectomy july/05.
I also wondered if it was tmj, although dentist said no.
please e-mail if possible, just knowing someone out there with my
symptoms is comforting
this is my first post, not sure if my e-mail will show , in case it
doesn't it is countrykate888@yahoo.ca

It may well be due to poor blood circulation in the head.  Talk to a
pharmacist and try gingko biloba for a month.  Never mind the
'controlled' studies.
