Murray tell me about attic retraction please

All I can find so far is far too technical. Can you tell me in plain
English?

The upper part of the ear drum is called the attic. Behind it is a hollow
space that connects to the mastoid cavity. When the attic part of the ear
drum is retracted or pulled in, it indicaties disease in the middle ear and
probably the mastoid itself. Commnonly seen in cholesteatoma.
