As I wrote in a previous post, I've had T for 13 years, and gradually
self-habituated over that time. However, in the last two months or so, my T
has gotten MUCH worse, and I'm not taking it well. Even though I should
know better, I'm experiencing really bad anxiety and sleeplessness.
Though I try not to, sometimes I'll take Lorazapam for sleep at bedtime.
This helped me get past the initial anxiety and sleeplessness I experienced
13 years ago, and it is letting me get some sleep now. (I haven't taken it
or any other tranq in those intervening 13 years.)
However, since the new level of T is much worse than before, I often
experience bad anxiety symptoms during the day. I don't take the Lorazapam
for daytime anxiety, but I'm now at the point where I may need to.
I'm wondering if I might be better off switching to Xanax, which is a more
typical short-term treatment for T-related anxiety. But I'm scared to death
of it because I've heard it can also cause or worsen T in some people.
Also, another poster in this group said that the Xanax helps, but when it
wears off, the T comes back even louder.
Does anyone know what percentage of Xanax users develop new or worsened T,
and is that T permanent or temporary?
I've seen a lot of messages from people in this group that have been helped
by Xanax, so I'm guessing not everyone experiences louder T when the Xanax
wears off.
I know neither Xanax or Lorazapam is a long term solution, and I don't want
to be taking either one. But at the moment, I need something when the
anxiety gets really bad.
Thanks.

Gary, I've personally have taken both Xanax and Ativan (Lorazapam)
successfully
on a temporary basis with no problems whatsoever. I didn't have issues
of increased tinnitus or withdrawal problems but everybody is so
different.
I found the Xanax and Ativan comparable.
As far as which treatment center you should go to, it's really a
personal decision.
Both clinics (described in your other post) seemed very reputable.

Frank,
Thanks very much for your response. It's really helpful to get some end user
perspective.
Regarding tinnitus clinics, I have a good comfort factor with either. Just
hoping to gather a little extra info that might tip the balance either way.
Thanks again.

everybody's reaction to either is different. You have to try it out on
your own. where you have to pay attention is the issue of
reversibility. ask your doctor how he can get you out later when you
don't want it. I used ativan before and it was a great help during the
crisis. Looking back, I should have taken more time to unwind myself
from it. working with your doc seems the best answer.
