This is particularly bothersome because I'm out of work, need to
interview for jobs, but can't because my hearing is so impaired.
Had a history of left ear infections. Usually wound up taking an
antibiotic which - along with some pretty good yawns - cleared
everything up and brought my hearing back. About a decade ago, after
going thru the antibiotic thing a number of times, the doctor suggested
we knock off the use of the antibiotics and have an itsy bitsy tiny
little tube put in the ear so it could drain. That solved the problem
for a long time. (What is that procedure called?)
After a long, long time of no problems, a couple of weeks ago the left
ear plugged up again (the little tube that was inserted fell out a few
years back). The right ear is also tending to stuff up (if I tilt my
head I can 'sense' some kind of shift of liquid?)
Doctor gave me penicillium (penicillium at my behest: as I recall
that's what we used years ago and it worked). Took that for a week
and the ear was still stuffed up. Went back to see the doctor but mine
wasn't available so saw the one that was shunted to me: a
pediatrician. She said the infection had cleared up and that the
stuffed up ear was probably due to an allergy of some kind.
I know that determining (well, I assume) what is causing the allergy
can take a long time. Problem is I am out of a job, must ( ! ) find one
soon, and it is hard as hell to interview, especially since I'm a
customer service person: if I can't hear the interviewer, let alone a
customer . . .
She (the pediatrician) gave me a prescription for Nasonex (bloody
expensive, especially when you don't have any medical insurance).
Three days and I don't note any improvement.
Is there anything else I can do to accelerate the clearing up of this
[ these ] ears ?? !!
And if anyone in San Diego knows of an otolaryngologist that will put
tubes in pro bono, PLEASE let me know.

The OTC antihistamine, clemastine (Tavist) is very drying and may help
with the fluid buildup. Oral decongestants may help, too, something
like pseudoephedrine.

I don't know what your financial resources are, but there are probably
public health clinics in your area. Also, ask the doc for samples of meds.

Susan:
Seeing your response set me back for just a moment because I've been
corresponding of late with an ex girl friend ... by the name of Susan
(and she's a Family Nurse Practitioner).
My financial resources are almost non-existant at this point. (Lost
my job and apartment while recovering this last year from a black widow
spider bite, believe it or not. This has not *been* my year!)
Have been using the public health clinic the last two weeks: doctors
there are the ones who have been 'treating' the ear. I just assume --
guess I'll have to find out -- that I am going to have to go thru h*ll
trying to convice them to do the tube thing without all kinds of
time-consuming tests.
When she mentioned Nasonex I thought I might have to pay $7 or $8
dollars: had no idea it would be almost $80. I shall remember your
suggestion!
THANK you, Susan.

Christopher: Nasonex and similar products are all available from the
companaies that make them at very low cost. You can ask the pharmacist or go
to the company web site for information.

Dr. Grossan,
Why is this American living in the 'affluent' society so desperate
needing help? Are the Americans having worse medical care than the
poor Chinese? We were told that the US is a model for the rest of
mankind.

Christopher, I'm sorry you've been having such a rough time of it with
illnesses and finances.
I hope you get the treatment you need.

You sound like a pretty well educated guy. At least your English is
better than many college students I met down in California. Next time
when you are on your way up again, make sure that you save a bit of
money, buy medical insurance, and above all, avoid any woman by the
name of Susan. She obviously left you because you went into a
financial pit. What else was the reason? Most women are monetary
animals. They are worse than dogs. Dogs don't desert their masters
when the masters are poor, but women have the tendency to bud out when
the financial affairs of the family are in shamble.

That is one of the most (among others of your classics)
astounding dumbass statements you've made here. Congrats.

Never mind the kind of label you place on what i said. It is whether
or not it is true or untrue that matters. Right, dr? Not true at
all...or mostly not true but true of some... or true of most women.
Now, tell me, are most women these days more spiritualistic than
materialistic or the other way around?

I think I know the cause of your tinnitus: it's called
"Foot in Mouth" disease. How the heck does it all fit in
your mouth though??
Just a wild guess- you're single, right?

Francis,
To speak directly to your message. How would I know what you think except
from what you write? And you've done an excellent job of expressing your
feelings. I hesitate to call them thoughts. I think that would give them too
much credit.
I had a ninth grade English teacher who had a favorite expression: "Better
you should keep your mouth shut and let people think you're stupid than you
should open your mouth and let them know so."
Another expression applies directly: When you're in a deep hole, the best
thing to do is to stop digging.
In your case, I think your best strategy right now is to sit on your hands.
You really are making a total fool out of yourself with your inane comments.
