I have had an outburst of tinnitus in the last 20 days, the last few
being noticeably dramatic.
My backround is that I spent years wearing headphones for music related
reasons, and have had short bursts of tinnitus that never created real
problems.
when I was a kid I also played in loud bands, but again years have
passed by and I never noticed a permanent increase.
The only trauma that I can associate with this sudden rise of noise
is that I spent many hours, about a month and a half ago over a period
of 2 weeks with headphones blasting as I was recording over a live drum
set, and could not hear without loud volume.
But my hearing was OK.
the other possible thing is that I have been smoking weed for the last
few months habitually, and I noticed an increase in the noise.
I stopped the weedsmoking, and the noise came down slightly.
my right ear, which is the weaker of the two seems to make more noise
than my left, but there is noise in both.
it sounds like a mixture between an 8 Kilohertz sine wave and a 1
Kilohertz sinewave.
the sound changes as the jaw is moved foreward, left or right.
What is going on?
Can this happen overnight?
I am taking Ginko Biloba drops in a no-alcohol solution, but I don't
know what the proper dosage is, or if this is the best form of the
substance or not.
Is there anything else I should take?

Yes, more precautions before blasting your ears anymore. Have you got a
pair of custom musician's ear plugs?

Imagine looking at yourself as you sit with loud headphones on and a
drum set blasting away.
Does your body tense up? Are your neck and shoulders hunched up?
And this could have been happening for years.
Then one day something sent the muscle tension over the edge and you
got tinnitus.

Thanks for your reply.
I was just about to go to bed but tonight I went out downtown where I
live with some earplugs in (I thought it might help).
I noticed the ringing went down and was not predominant in my weak ear
anymore.
Then I noticed in the town square a rock cover band I liked.
I watched the show, no problem since I had the earplugs in.
When I went home I plugged the electric guitar in and blasted for about
a half hour, sure that with the full earplugs it would not harm me in
any way.
Strangely enough after the half hour, my tinnitus awoke again.
the strange thing is that the apparent volume was probably less than
speaking level, but my body reacted in a negative way.
I took the earplugs off and my tinnitus is pronounced once again.
Volume was not what triggered it off, but the intensity of the 'sound
experience' did.
How very strange.
it seems as if I have exhausted the dynamic range of feeling sound.
as I write the effects are calming down.
I believe that it is a form of nervous exhaustion in a way.
Elly, whoever you are you have identified my personality\body type and
my habits.
This is foreign to most of my experience, but music has made me
sensitive to physical sensation.
This seems to me very much a nervous ailment, or exhaustion. The
dynamic range of my nervous system has been reduced, and anything can
upset it?
this is a very strange sensation for me.
Keep in mind that music is the most important thing in my life, and I
have been playing since i was three years old as an amateur.
I will check the links.
What should I do or take, for now, to help?
Thank You.

This is the best place to start:

But think of the muscular component (which may result in the nerves
being upset).
Think Muscular Tension.

First off; yes, tinnitus can appear suddenly. I don't recall ever
having any previous symptoms, then one day out of the clear blue sky,
RRIIIINNGGG!!!
Secondly; I hope you aren't going to start haphazardly taking
whatever is suggested to you here.
Every single medicinal or herbal remedy you take will have potential
side effects.
You may have a certain undiagnosed condition or deficiency in which a
seemingly harmless remedy, could turn out to be extremely hazardous for
you personally. For instance I just happen to know that I have a
condition which would probably lead to internal bleeding if I took
gingko. Imagine what might have happened to me if I didn't know about
this obscure condition, and started experimenting with this popular
tinnitus remedy.
Educate yourself regarding popular medicinal and herbal remedies, and
proceed with extreme caution. Seek qualified certified professional
advice whenever possible.
See a certified Ear Nose & Throat specialist.
And also look into my pet remedy (we all have one) the Jastreboff Model
aka habituation by going to: www.tinnitus.org Habituation or Tinnitus
Retraining Therapy is something you can achieve on your own if you
study the concept and are able to accept it and put it into practice.
Best of luck to you!

You may have a circulatory problem. That is, your noise level came
down when you stopped smoking. Smoking restricts the blood flow. Are
you experiencing any effect from ginkgo biloba? If yes, then stick to
it. Don't expect the problem to disappear over night. Stick to it for
at least 6 months.

What is the dosage I should take?
I gave some non-alcohol drops branded nature's helper.
45 drops are equivalent to 1575 mg of fluid extract 1:1
I have been taking it for a couple of days and it seems as if there is
a slight positive effect, but I really don't have enough of a history
to judge.
BTW I have been running the last few years through my head, and I now
recall that I have had slight tinnitus for a while now, but it was much
lower and I attributed it to my jaw, since moving my jaw changes the
sound.
today I wore earplugs all day at work, and the sound is still here,
although my ears are less tired and a little more sensitive.
I talked to my mom about it and she had it as well, even though she
never had noise exposure, although hers is more pops and clicks.
Today for a few seconds I thought I heard an air conditioner in my
right ear! Amazing what can come out. The funny thing is that the
noise came about when I stepped into the car that had been heated up by
the sun while parked. It's almost as if the sound is "echoing" the
sensations of the rest of my body'.
My personality is absolutely not suited to habituation of any kind, I
tend to be very active in resolving important problems, and just
getting used to it would probably stress me further.
The sound changes depending on my physical movements. Could this be an
indication of any kind regarding the nature of the tinnitus??
Thanx

OK! Since you had experienced the positive effect from GB on your
tinnitus, you *should* stick to it. Never mind what the 'controlled'
studies have to say. Most quasi-scientists and their confirmists
followers have no clue of the limitations of these 'controlled'
studies. They are SQUARE-HEADED people!
I don't think you need to be that specific on how much you should take.
I think what you are taking is enough for the time being.
Also, since you indicated you could change your t sound by moving your
jaws, you may be suffering from what is called 'somatice tinnitus' or
tinnitus related to muscle tension. Most 'high-tech' US doctors don't
want to touch on this topic as they were not trained to touch something
outside of their narrow-minded domain.
What you could do, in relation to the 'possible' cause from muscle
tension, is the following:
(1)Visit a chiro once a week to have your spine relaxed a bit.
(2)Lower your pillow in order to help out the blood circulation.
Once the discomfort is out of the way, your tinnitus will slowly heal
and you can call that 'habituation'. Remember, there is no quick fix
for tinnitus. Put yourself on GB and perform the above 2 steps for a
long long time. You may experience more tangible improvement after a
month or so. I am glad you experienced the effect of GB so quickly. I
experienced it on the following day in the form of a brain ring turned
into a drum ring of the ear. That is to say, the ringing moved out
from the centre of the brain 'outward'. However, the quasi-scientists
at alt expressed great disbelief because that was not the way they had
been taught by 'controlled' studies.

Ginko is a muscle relaxant and so improves blood flow.

That proves the muscular component.
