Cure, no, but drastic reduction after a dramatic worsening on high dose
oral doxycycline.  My T was/is caused by chronic tick borne infections,
and the worsening was bacterial die off producing endotoxins, then very
quiet T was all that remained.

Sometimes the soft hiss gets loud, if I'm ill or I eat a lot of
salicylate, but it dies down again after a while.

Some other folks with persistently intrusive T get a lot of relief from
Xanax, but not a cure.

I luckily just happened to already have a prescription for Xanax for
occasional anxiety attacks, when my T started. Since the tinnitus was
starting to freak me out, I of course took a Xanax and experienced a
tremendous amount of relief. I became even more relieved when I found
out that many consider Xanax an ideal medication for not just reliving
the anxiety caused by tinnitus, but also in relieving the tinnitus
itself. I can't help but feel that it would go a long way towards
helping one habituate the ringing. Even though I've since found
substantial relief from my T by significantly reducing jaw, neck and
shoulder strain (via memory foam mattress & pillows, deep tissue
massage, better posture, gentle neck stretching exercises and not
clenching jaw/grinding teeth) and don't need the Xanax anymore,
it's very comforting to know that I have that Xanax at the ready just
incase the T flairs up again, especially at bedtime!
I also highly recommend, based on personal experience: A white noise
generator while sleeping, lots of fluids, extra Zinc, B-12 and lots of
omega-3 (found in fish-fish oil). Ginkgo is also recommended by many,
but as I'm a bleeder and bruise easily, I decided (and my ENT agreed)
to skip that one.

If you're an easy bleeder, you should probably cut back on the anti
thrombotic fish oil, too.

Just wondering how much Xanax (and how often) you found necessary to have
the effect. I've had mild high-pitched whistling tinnitus my entire adult
life, but about 1 month ago it got really bad. As far as I can tell it's
closely related to eating foods that require chewing. If I eat only soup and
cream of wheat for a couple days it almost goes back to normal levels. I
have an older prescription for Xanax sitting in my nightstand which I
haven't used but your experience makes me think it's worth trying. Does it
leave you feeling woozy during the day?

Thanks...

Tom S.

I do fine on just .25 mg of Xanax at night on a "per need" basis
(usually
on high stress days).  I don't have any problems with being sleepy the
next day as some of the other meds out there (Elavil for example).

Have you tried relaxing your spine with either a good chiro pillow or a
chiro treatment once a week?  It will take 1-3 months before you could
feel the effect.  That is what happened to me.
