Sorry to repeat myself but I need to convince my GP!

Does anyone know if Valium is as effective as Xanax in treating tinnitus?
Or, is there any difference if they are both benzodiazepenes?

Thank you

I can't say for sure, which is why I didn't reply earlier, but...
Valium is short acting, Xanax is longer acting.  Folks I know who've
been rx'd such drugs have used Xanax for tinnitus and Klonopin for
vertigo due to their longer acting quality.

The only controlled test done is one on Xanax. It showed a reduction in
tinnitus loudness. It was NOT an effectively blinded trial, however. To my
knowledge, Valium has never been tested.

Xanax helps some people, even long term, but it is a double-edged sword. You
need a physician who understands it and will manage you over the long haul.

Ben,

A few years back I was given a prescription of 2 mg Valium, it was mostly to
help me relax to get to sleep when I was having a bad day (loudness and
resultant anxiety). I didn't really notice any difference in the tinnitus as
a result of taking it (did help relax me though) and stopped after the
prescription ran out. Didn't really like the Valium hangover feeling the
next morning.

Thanks Greg. Have you tried Xanax too?

No Ben, I've never tried Xanax, I would rather just deal with the tinnitus
on my own. It's been about 8 years now (hard to believe). I have days where
it's almost like it was before I had it, barely perceptible and days when I
want to scream. On the bad days I take it easy and try not to do to much,
just roll with it. You can learn to live with it, but it does take time. It
would be incredible if there is ever found a treatment that can really work,
but if there isn't, I can deal.
