All;
hope you do not mind me asking. I am looking to find a newsgroup that might
help me to understand myringoplasty / ossiculoplasty - whether I should go
ahead or not.
Can anyone help?
Thanks, T

Myringoplasty is simply repairing the ear drum. If there is a hole in the
ear drum, myringoplasty is the procedure to close the hole.
Ossiculoplasty is the procedure to fix the 3 little bones of the ear so they
work properly so you can hear. Sometimes one of the bones needs to be
reshapped or replaced with a wire or similar product.
Both surgeries are "standard" and thousands of these are performed every
year.

I am still a bit unsure what to do. I am in the UK and my private health
insurance ends in 3 or 4 months time (just lost my job). The perforated
eardrum does not bother me too much - it feels blocked" when I have a cold
and sometimes get infected - but I kind of feel I should get it fixed now
anyway. If I don't I'll have to wait for the NHS which can take ages and
ages to organise.

I'm just really scared by operations......!! Any views?

The reason for having a perforated ear drum repaired is
A. usually better hearing
B. you can now go swimming without getting infected
C. you have much less chance of getting an ear infection which could reduce
your hearing and even lead to serious ear disease.
