this treatment is now being advertised in the UK in the form of a
walkman-like device.It is called a "Tinnimed" and is a "5mW medical
soft laser transmitter connected by a fiber optic cable and an adaptor
with a soft silicone tip to the ear..."
This is from a VERY reputable company--Puretone--and I have just
received their literature. The claims are that over several trails
totalling 1746 patients;
7% no change
10 % totally cured
30% tempory relief
53% definitive relief
as a sufferer of T for 20 years now this sounds like good odds to me!

1) What's a "soft" laser - just an LED ?
2) Why should shining coherent light into the ear have any effect anyway?
What's the theory behind it? (I once tried it - made no difference).
3) ?300 ? That's probably it's most effective feature and the only reason
it ever 'works'. Once you've spent that much your placebo effect becomes
highly motivated !

Well I for one would like to look more closely about what it claims to
do or how they claim it works. Then I'd like to see some reports by
the people who say it has been a cure or a relief. I'd want to know
what they judge as a relief and a cure. How measurable is the relief
and what is the criteria for an improvement in tinnitus? It's a very
difficult thing to measure - almost impossible I'd say.
I will have a look at the website to see what they are claiming for
it.

Just following up to my visit to the site. I could find nothing on
the puretone website that mentioned anything about any Laser device
costing 300 plus. Searching the site for references to the word
"Laser" produced no results.
I combed all the Tinnitus relief devices and they only seem to be
selling White Noise Generators. So I'm puzzled now as to where the
information came from that suggests they sell a laser device.
Have they withdrawn it perhaps ?

I read an article about using laser as tinnitus therapy:
"Transmetal cochlear laser (TCL) treatment of cochlear dysfunction: A
feasibility study for chronic tinnitus"
S. Tauber et all.
Laser Med Sci (2003) 18:154-161
As usual the study involves few people without a control group, other
papers on this topic describe contrasting results. I wasn't able to find
a valuable study with positive judgment about laser therapy.
