sound and pressure - blocked ears & tinnitus

hello,
i 'caught' a tinnitus at a rock concert about 3 months ago. I was
wearing this stupid yellow foam earplugs but it was so loud and i was
standing so close to the speaker (the band was not playing on stage
but in the audience) that the earplugs where not protecting from bass
and 'bones earing' (excuse my weird english).
One thing i dont understand is that my ears are also blocked, most of
the time and both of them (even though i got a loss and a tinnitus on
the left side, which was the closest to the bassplayer speaker). My dr
said there was nothing in the ear and according to him, they are not
blocked. I became very sensitive to loud noises but also to pressure
changes, like when i'm in a car or in a train. Is anyone else
experiencing the same thing?

Thanx for any help.
Stéphane

Hi Stef,

Can you imagine that when standing close to the speaker your shoulders
all hunched up and got very tight? And this muscle tension is still
there. And it is causing all the things you mentioned.

Have a look at this site. There are pages on muscle tension, earpain
and hyperacusis (sensitivity to sound).

i get the same sensation even after a year of not playing in a band and
avoiding loud sound completely (ringing and pressure change)
my right ear feels blocked and i get a swirling pressure changing sensation
through my head and ears which makes me quite dizzy and has knocked me to
the ground on a few occasions
i went swimming for the first time in years a few weeks ago even wearing
earplugs and my ears felt completely raped even after 10 minutes in the
water
the ringing hasnt stopped in almost a year and i get stabbing pains in both
of my ears for no reason or when sound is around but mainly in the right one
i also have a lymph node just infront of the right ear but the specialist
said it was nothing
im still waiting for my ENT appointment
all i can do is put on the radio and try and pretend its not there
its hard to quit my previous lifestyle of playing in bands and studying
music even wearing earplugs around accoustic guitars...
now i just listen to music softly 24/7 to try and not notice it but the
notes of the ringing change pitch and put me off balance with the music so
im always tweaking with the balance on the stereo equipment to try and feel
comfortable

i dunno how to help or what my post will achieve but you arent alone even
though it feels that way
rock and roll is a dangerous thing

Hi St?phane,

My hearing was also damaged at a Music event 2 years ago.  I was one of the
sound engineers working on a broadcast of the event and it was necessary for
me to work occasionally on the stage near the 'side fills'.  The sound
levels were very, very high on the stage and 8 hours later my ears were
ringing like an alarm siren.  Two years on they are still ringing, but it is
now a constant loud hiss with 8khz to 11khz tone swishing up and down at
random. My worst ear also feels blocked and  loud sounds now cause me to
feel dizzy - even my own voice makes my head spin.

I hope you find a good ENT doctor St?phane, or at least one who is
sympathetic to your situation. I've now seen 3 doctors and have only just
found one who believes me!

All the best St?phane, we are far from alone.
Mike

You probably know this by now, but this is called the Tullio phenomenon. I
would guess that this is perhaps evidence of hydrops caused by the incident
you describe. (Excess fluid in the inner ear causes the sacccule to enlarge
and be affected by the stapes.) You might see if a low sodium diet or a
diuretic is helpful.
