Ken - 13 Dec 2004 23:21 GMT Today I was diagnosed with tinnitus after buzzing or ringing in my ears began about 10 days ago. Right now I am quite depressed. Are there any words of advice to get me out of this depression? I'm looking for support.

Well, I don't know if words of advice will relieve your sadness at your loss of silence, but it might help to know that there are various causes for tinnitus, some treatable. In almost all cases, folks whose tinnitus lasts habituate it over time and don't notice it.
I know that's very hard to believe right now, but just read the last month or so of posts right here from Jennifer Bell (you can google them up).
One other thing. Tinnitus is a symptom, not a diagnosis, really. It can be caused by an infection or disease process, as in my case. I'm fortunate that the antibiotics that initially worsened it to a roar eventually cut it back down to near silence. Thyroid dysfuntion is another possible cause of tinnitus. So are noise damage, neuromas, etc..
I don't know if you know the cause of your T, or how much of a complete diagnostic internal medicine, infectious disease or endocrinological workup you've had, so those may be avenues to pursue, while understanding that your T may or may not be here to stay.
Stick around.

Any other symptoms or signs that occurred around the same time? My own T is caused by tick borne disease. Any chances of that type of exposure?
It gets better, Ken, whether you find the cause or not. The folks on this board can help a lot while it's bugging you.

Bill - 14 Dec 2004 00:29 GMT > x-no-archive: yes > [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > > Susan How well I remember when my tinnitus started. I was commuting from my lake place in Minnesota to my job in North Dakota. Hopped in the car, got about 3 miles down the road, and RINGGGGGGG. It just came "out of the blue" and never left. Probably from a lifetime of auditory abuse but who knows?

You should post your wonderful "Habituation for Dummies." I think it should be a regular weekly post here.
Whether folks are seeking causes and/or treatment, it's advice worth heeding.

Ken - 14 Dec 2004 02:06 GMT Is it difficult to deal with or do you just get use to it?
Bill - 14 Dec 2004 02:35 GMT > Is it difficult to deal with or do you just get use to it? It was difficult for me at first because I was frightened that it might be a symptom of something even worse than the noise and because I gave it all of my attention. Thanks to the nice folks who hang around this group, I learned to ignore it. Here are a few things that helped me:
1. I saw an ENT who ruled-out an acoustic neuroma.
2. I avoided silence.
3. I went to sleep listening to the BBC with my radio set to go off in 60 minutes.
4. I kept myself busy with mentally stimulating activities that pulled my attention away from my tinnitus.
5. I stayed away from this group for a couple of years. Now I only notice my tinnitus when someone asks me how it is doing or when I visit this group.
Jennifer Bell - 14 Dec 2004 03:22 GMT just don't fight it like I did, the ore emotional you are the louder your Tinnitus..keep telling yourself everyday..I dont want to hear this anymore.
eventually yu'll be right.

Susan, about 4 days after the ringing began I came down with a so-so cold and possible sinus infection. My family doctor prescribed and 5-day antibiotic. Tomorrow is my last day taking it. ENT said my ears looked normal. My hearing test was normal. The ringing is sometimes in one ear (either) or both. Possible I'm over-reacting to something that will go away in another week or so? I guess only time will tell. Right now my moods are very high (I won't let it beat me), to very low (concerned about the quality of live.... the unknown). Thanks for taking the time to chat with me!

He confirmed what I've always found to be true; less than 3-4 weeks of abx for sinus infection rarely kills it. 5-10 days just pisses it off. :-)

Look yours up on rxlist.com under adverse reactions. One long ago poster here got his tinnitus from Biaxin or with Biaxin during tx for a sinus infection. I

Reality check: It WON'T beat you. It'll bug the sh.t out of you for a while, then it'll become a non-issue even if it's still around. Feeling low when it's new and intrusive is only natural.

Susan - 14 Dec 2004 02:48 GMT >Tomorrow is my last day taking it. >ENT said my ears looked normal. Have you had a tympanogram, to check for clogs in your eustachian tube? I used to get awful snap, crackle pop in my ears from clogged tubes. I don't know why you'd have a hearing test during an infection but not a tympanogram?

Air pressure in the ear canal is varied to test the condition and mobility (movement) of the ear drum (tympanic membrane). This test determines the functionality of the tympanic membrane by observing its response to waves of pressure, and measuring the pressure of the middle ear. There may be some discomfort while the probe is in the ear, but no harm will result. You will hear a loud tone as the measurements are taken. The normal pressure inside the middle ear is 100 daPa (a very small amount). The tympanic membrane should appear smooth and symmetrical. Tympanometry may reveal any of the following:
a.. Fluid in the middle ear b.. Perforated ear drum c.. Impacted ear wax d.. Scarring of the tympanic membrane e.. Lack of contact between the conduction bones of the middle ear f.. A tumor in the middle ear

This is not an ear disease, althought it may begin in the inner ear it is the brain that causes the problem.

My suggestion is to find a trusted therapist and have a thorough massage. Chances are that the neck and shoulder muscles are very tense.
