Just been told by my ENT consultant that my assymetric T (left ear
only) is indicative of a small benign tumour. I will need to have an
MRI scan

Anyone been down this path?

Is he basing that diagnosis on an ABR/BAER/BSER test? (Auditory brainstem
response test.) Otherwise, your chance of a neuroma is still very slight.

No hearing loss or dizziness? Only tinnitus?

Either he didn't state it with clarity or you may be
misinterpreting/misstating what s/he said.

Unilateral tinnitus raises a red flag for the possibility of an acoustic
neuroma. But it does not mean that it "is indicative of a small benign
tumour", which to me is a far more positive statement that the tumor is
present. So s/he is doing the MRI to cover the bases and to determine "if" a
tumor is present. Be sure to have them give you hearing protectors when they
do the MRI. These machines are very noisy and have the potential to worsen
your T.

There is a blow by blow description of an MRI procedure here:

Again you won't know if it is a growth or not until the MRI. If it is, these
are slow growing and fairly easy to treat.

Why?  I've have had a couple MRI's in my lifetime and they are
fairly quick and very painless; if you need one, don't forgo it
because of the process.
