Lib, please just do what ENT suggests.
Surgery is not the answer.

Tinnitus is a pain in the neck

when you place EMG sensors on the Frontalis muscle the patient learns to reduce
tha electric output of this branch of the facial nerve. This serves to reduce
the tensor muslce spasm.
You might get a good effect by doing the biofeedback exercises at
www.eht-consult.com for TMJ. Similar idea. You are reducing the stimulation of
the facial nerve.
But is is also important to understand that this is no different than an eye
twitch or a hiccup. It is not a danger, will not cause hearing loss, etc. But
the more anxiety you put into it, the more stimulation you get.
Everyone tells you to relax. But that happens to be the cure for this
condition. I have never had to do surgery for my patients for this condition,
nor do I know of anyone in my area who had to.

hi dr grossan,
what causes tensor tympani? where do i get this emg treatment from?
could it be tmj related?
i also have snapping sounds that come from behind my nose, above my
palate, and random spasms/contractions in and around those areas, other
people can hear it, sometimes it sounds blocked or crunchy. no doc so far
has been able to say what it is for sure, they cannot see it move or
twitch and it is not rythmical, so they do not think it is palatal. one
thinks it could be a chain reaction from the tensor tympani muscle.
another is sending me for mri, he suspects this might be unusual spasms
from tmj.  swollowing sounds and feels abnormal now as well, i am
miserable.
any ideas, thoughts? they are ready to schedule the tt surgery and i am
very desperate for help.
thank you for your thoughts on this,
lib

Call the physical therapy department at your local hospital and they can tell
you if they do EMG biofeedback or where to go for it. Althought this is not
caused by TMJ, the TMJ exercises at my web site are a type of biofeedback that
might clear the condition.
