I am having a miserable time with acute sinusitis recurrent. I have
had 4 episodes in a space of a year. Each time the gp had prescribed
antibiotics which have usually been effective. This time amoxycillin
hasnt been effective and Im waiting to see if cefalexin will work. My
symptoms are facial discomfort, and fatigue and weakness. I
previously never took time off work and each attack has meant time off
work. I have asked to be referred to ent but have been advised this
can take a year if not more. I would be grateful for any advice. I
am normally very energetic and each episode upsets me more. The Gp
did not have any answers and I have decided to try acupuncture.

You need to see a sinus specialist. Ask your GP for a referral.

I can't believe your GP told you it would be a year to see an ENT! Yikes.
Usually in big university centers it might take a month or two at most.
Where are you located? Can you call an ENT direct without a referral? I
agree with Don, you need a specialist at this point. You most likely have
resistance now to amoxycillan from so much use, and each time your GP use
antibiotics you become more resistant to them. I know how you feel, trust
me, as most of us with chronic sinusitis do...but your first step is
getting correct care. Good luck and let us know! Trudy.

Sorry I missed the sentence at first in which the orginal poster mentioned the
prospect of a one year delay in seeing an ENT.
She needs to "game" her health network (whatever it is) to get around the
delay. She may be in a strict HMO or in another country.
Calling an ENT directly is a good start as she can try to ask them to call her
GP if they are willing to help.
She should go ahead and get a written referrral (even if it is a year out) and
then call the specialist once a week (or more often) to ask if there are any
unexpected cancellations so that she can move up her appointment.
She can call her HMO plan and ask them how to get a faster referral. Then
write a nicely-worded letter to her GP (cc: the HMO) asking for an appointment
within one month and requesting a written reply. If they reply negatively, or
do not reply, file an appeal and contact whatever governemnt regulatory
authority (e.g Insurance Commission) exists.
etc. etc.
It will work They never want a paper trail that documents their
malfeasance.......

Hello,
I donot know what you mean by "facial discomfort". "Fatigue and weakness"
comes from pain, yes, and a lot of other things of a
health nature. Did someone tell you you had a sinus infection?
Your present Doc sounds scary to me - get rid of him quick!!!!
You need to find out what is going on right away or it will
become chronic, which is probably what your GP wants - he
makes a lot more money that way . . . wise up, move fast and
save yourself NOW instead of waiting for tomorrow, because
tomorrow never comes; we have only today . . .

Facial discomfort could mean problems in the maxillary sinuses. Those are
very difficult to treat through normal means. I've found a technique for
ridding myself of sinus infections, but I don't think that my infections
were in my maxillaries.
After suffering with multiple sinus infections, year after year, for
decades, I experimented with flooding my nasal passages with a mixture of
diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and kosher salt. In order to flood
my nasal passages and keep them flooded, I keep my forehead pointed
downward. I keep my forehead down for quite a while, hoping that the
anti-infective mixture can get to the infected area(s) within my sinuses and
nasal passages.
.
It works! I have been sinus infection free for about 3 years. I think that I
had chronic infection problems with my turbinates, so flooding my nasal
passages with the anti-infective mixture worked very well, for me, since the
infected areas were fairly easy to reach.
.
I have fully documented my experience and how I did it at Healthboards.com.
There are posts there by people who have tried my "upside down sinus
flooding" and have received either partial relief or total relief. There are
also posts there from those who it hasn't helped, and by those who don't
think that it is a good idea. I have no connection at all with Healthboards.
I use it because I consider it to be the best facility for discussing health
problems on the Internet.
