"Well, cortisone is a natural hormone in the body, so I would not say that
it is "not good for our bodies".
For most people, regular taking of oral steroids is not a good idea of
course."
Thank you for posting that cortisone is a natural hormone. I think people
read the dangers of coticosteroids (like prednisone) and don't study the
benefits. I have been on prednisone for 23 years, sometimes high dose,
sometimes low. I was told long ago about protecting my bones, making sure
to get enough calcium and vitamin D, eating right, exercising, etc. Yes, I
have had some negative side effects when on high doses, lost my hair,
menses stopped, skin got papery, got the moony face and barrel upper
body...it all went away when dose was decreased. Now I am on daily 5mg.
and seem to be doing okay though it is harder to maintain normal weight. I
have had candida from high doses and when that happens I take Diflucan, use
oral Nystatin Swish/Swallow, and eat Acidopholis yogurt. The yogurt itself
is not strong enough to kill true candida though it can keep it in check.
Also, very important in my opinion...simple carbohydrates feed candida and
help it to grow, when on prednisone you crave carbs...stay away from all
sugars while on it and eat complex carbs to keep yeast from growing. Know
how yeast grows in sugar water before you make homemade bread? That is
what happens in the body too. Good luck and let us know how you are doing

Hello,
Prednisone has been out for 23 years?
Howcome it isnot over-the-counter by now?
It should be . . . after "23 years" . . .
Or is it?

No, it is not over the counter and for good reason. It is a double edged
sword in the medical field. On one hand it can save your life...as in my
case, on another is causes the adrenal gland to shut down while it does
it's job making cortisol for the body...and that has to be monitered by a
professional. Yes, I have been on it for 23 years. I was 23 when I had my
first respiratory arrest...was hospitalized for a week on IV prednisone
and sent home on oral steroids, inhalers, and bronchodilaters that has
lasted my lifetime so far...I am 46. I was warned to take care of my body
long ago because of the side effects. Trudy.

trudy,
thanks for the reply.
can you tell me approximately - what was the highest daily dose you've
ever been on and for how long?
it seems like 20mg per day controls my inflammation. if i drop below
that, i start to get into a bit of trouble. but, 20mg per day I guess
seems like a lot. I know they have it in 50mg tabs and start you out
on courses of like 50-60mg then ween you down quickly when doing short
term therapy. But, a typical short course prednisone pack - like one
week course the loading dose - first days dose is a mere 24mg I think.

iJah...I think you are talking about the Solu-Medrol DosePak which is a
little different, though not much, than prednisone. Sometimes I take that
or Prednisolone, all a little different chemically. Anyway...my highest
dose has been IV steroids for a week. After that 60mg. x one week, then
50mg. x one week and so on. Like you, I get to 20 and have good
maintainance...like now. I was on 5mg. daily last week, 10mg. eod (every
other day) this week and if I don't stay better will go to 20mg. eod soon.
Depending on your doctor you will get a different answer as to high dose.
My ENT thinks 20mg. a day is heading toward high and would like to keep me
at 10mg. I have also found the Solu-Medrol to work better at times but it
seems when going long term like now (six months so far) they use
prednisone on me. I am go glad you are feeling better and getting relief.
I know the mind game you play with yourself about this medication, believe
me. I fought it for years and decided I just wanted to feel better and have
some assembalance of a quality of life even if that shortened my life. It
didn't mamke sense to me to spend 40 years miserable and not functioning
instead of 30 good years comparatively. Trudy.
