Just back from my ENT. Mr. Kalpesh Patel. www.entconsultant.com

My CT Scan is ugly.

Except for the frontal, all my sinuses are almost completely fulled
up. All ethmoids, and right sphenoid included.

Even the frontal seems to not have any drainage at all.

Plus there is some calcification in the maxilary that the doctor says,
may indicate fungus.

And nothing comes out when irrigating! It just feels solid, completely
clogged.

According to the doctor, it looks like there is plenty of blockage due
to polyps.

I am starting a 28 day Clarithromycin 500mg course, accompanied with
Prednisolone 30mg steroid, Betnesol (Betamethasone, Celestone)steroid
and antibiotic nose drops and Flixonase (Flonase) steroid spray.

I have just finised two courses of other antibiotics. Chances are this
one won't work either, in which case, surgery will follow.

My third operation. And, according to the doctor, the more you operate
the sinuses, the more scaring and the less normal cilia function (if
any).

I have now a very discomforting chest pain, that seems infected too.

If anybody knows a well respected ENT surgeon in London, UK, please
let me know.

Hello,
I feel you arenot listening.
Antibiotics make fungus worse. Cortisone makes fungus worse.
Yes get the polyps out. I had polypectomies all my adult life,
and have no known changes in my sinuses. One of the surgeries
was where they go up under your flesh on your face. When i
went for that one, my son laughingly said the Doc wasnot
going to get my cheeks back on straight, when i told them
in the surgery room, what he said, the silence was deafening -
i thought it was funny too though . . .
Go here:
http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/afung.html
until you can get to a NORTHERN Mayo Clinic. This Dixie
Mayo i went to is a laff and a half . . . and they admit it.
The Japanese are coming up with some good things, however.
So hang in there; stay strong and healthy, and stay
away from Docs. as much as you can. Think Health Food Store.
Be sure to read everything here not just your own, because
there are answers for you right here if you will just read
us . . . ALL OF US . . . ALL OF IT . . . You are very lucky
to have alt.support.sinusitis, so read all of it.

I must admit that you may well have a point.

Two cultures of my nose and throat did not grow any pathogen.

I have always been prone to skin rushes caused by fungus and that I
easily cleared with creams.

Sometimes white mucus (not transparent) comes from my nose after
irrigating.

I have always had a sweet tooth.

How do I find out/test for fungus?

(Sorry, some of my questions may have been answered many times here,
but I don't seem to have access to the archives)

What is the best Mayo clinic? I may go.

I will continue with this abx+steroid treatment. Antibiotics have
worked before and it is one alternative I have to give a try to.
Perhaps I have both, bacterial and fungus infections.

Many thanks.

Hello,

Every time i go to my ENT i wind up with a Staph infection
in my sinuses. I think this time i go back to him i am
going to tell him. So, yes, you probably have both.

You are in too deep to stop your present medications,
however that doesnot mean you cannot start the other,
after you get your polyps out - well that is silly,
you can start right now - today, and then get serious
about it after your surgery is all healed up. See
about what i am speaking by reading the enclosed.

There is a war going on about the fungus in the sinuses,
and the people fighting against the theory are the type
of people that punch below the belt, so just stay out
of the fight and do the best you can with what you
find where you are.
Here is some information for you to think about, and
get you started in the right direction for when the
time comes that someone will be there for you:

`````
First thing for anyone with sinus trouble is to use and eat natural, organic
yogurt.
You cannot handle milk? Tough luck; there is no replacement, so try
the trade off, because perhaps you have allergy to begin with because
of the fungus.
Here are all the things you need to know to get started::
A neat statement to remember:
?Amphotericin B
Amphotericin B is much more effective than oral amphotericin B, with
virtually none of the side effects?
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Most fungi simply colonise the sinuses and sit there without causing any
inflammation.
Occasionally the fungi may invade the mucous membranes and provoke intense
inflammation
and allergic response. Even more rarely the fungi may invade the bones of
the facial skeleton
and damage blood vessels and nerves, even extending to the eye and brain

Therapy for the Amphotericin B deoxycholate, nose spray is:
3 months;
5 squirts each nostral;
2 times aday;
Another Possible Procedure, however using ONLY the 10-squirts worth, and
only done twice
aday, and remembering this MUST NOT be swallowed;
http://www.digitalnaturopath.com/cond/C55833.html
The Sinus Flooding Procedure:
a. Lay on a bed face up with the head hanging over the edge of the mattress
so the nostrils are
pointing straight up toward the ceiling.
b. Use an eye dropper to fill each nostril with the rinse solution. Keep
filling each nostril until
the rinse solution starts to drip in the throat. Remain in the same position
for 2 to 3 minutes.
c. Roll over on the stomach and let the head flop forward over the edge of
the mattress. Remain
in that position for 2 to 3 minutes then sit up and let the rinse drain out
through the nose.
(THIS FOLLOWING DOESNOT APPLY TO US AT THE PRESENT AND/OR UNTIL AN
ACTUAL "WASH" IS MADE AVAILABLE)
d. Important: Repeat this procedure 45 minutes later. The two rinses 45 minutes
apart constitute
a single rinse session. Perform two or more such rinse sessions per day.
Relief will typically be
noticeable by the second day. It is not unusual for the sinus infection to
be gone within three
days.
e. Repeat two sessions per day until the infection subsides. Very persistent
infections may
require five to seven day or more.
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Amphotericin B deoxycholate nasal spray/wash is shipped in a cold pack and
must be kept
refrigerated. Only a one month's supply at a time is available, because it
is so perishable,
however i finally found a "Dixie" Mayo Clinic near me and am now using the
"wash", not
"drops", and is $50.00 cheaper than the above-mentioned drugstore.
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Here are interesting statements i saw while rushing through the Internet.
It is nice to know if you
absolutely must put your life at risk with Amphotericin B, you can quickly
get off of it :

?Surgical treatment is mandatory. Initiate medical treatment with systemic
antifungals once
invasion is diagnosed. Amphotericin B (2 g/d) is recommended; this can be
replaced by
ketoconazole or itraconazole once the disease is under control?.

AND AGAIN:

?Acute invasive fungal sinusitis
Emergent treatment is necessary once this condition is suspected. Initiate
systemic antifungal
treatment after surgical debridement. High doses of amphotericin B (1-1.5
mg/kg/d) are
recommended. Oral itraconazole (400 mg/d) can replace amphotericin B once
the acute stage
has passed. Treatment of the underlying immune deficiency, if possible, is
desirable.?

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
The last thing i must say is unless you are on your death-bed,  use Amphotericin
B only as a
nasal spray/wash, because it can and has caused heart attack when taken internally
http://health.yahoo.com/health/ency/adam/003504/treatment
http://www.umc-cares.org/health_info/ADAM/Articles/003503.asp
Another thing: they say the body doesnot absorb the amphotericin B nasal
wash from the nose,
however i amnot nursing one hurtfulashell Gout, which i have never had in
my life, for nothing. I
called the Jacksonville drugstore and asked if Amphotericin B causes Gout,
and the liars said,
no, and here is your proof that it does (hyperuricemia shows up as Secondary
Gout) under
Adverse Reactions (at the bottom, last line of the fine print):
http://www.cancernetwork.com/drugs/Abelcet.htm
Here is a picture of what i now look like:
http://www.aafp.org/afp/990215ap/925_f1.jpg
As soon as i stopped my Amphotericin B nasal wash, my sinuses showed yellow
discharge; the
Candida/Aspergillus is enjoying the lull, and i have now made an appointment
with the Mayo
Clinic, since this entire thing is their findings.
Wow, this is a lot good information.
I am going to ask my ENT to test me for fungus and proceed from there.
Concerning yogurt, don't they say diary is bad because it increases mucus secretion?
I have taken yogurt all my life. I am now taking also good bacteria capsules.
Many thanks, indeed.
Shirley Thebaglady - 10 Oct 2004 12:15 GMT
Yogurt- I have used the Soy yogurt (Stonyfield) it is organic.  It has
helped with stomach problems and my sinus infections too.
I buy mine at my local food store- Stop and Shop.
I use to get a lot of sinus infections and had stomach ulcers in the
past.
I am lactate intolerance.
Your sinus history sounds a lot like mine and many others and the course of
treatment you are on seems the general way to go before surgical
intervention. Can't help you with the ENT search in your country,
hopefully someone can though. You will most likely find relief with the
sytemtic and nasal steroids and antibiotics. I agree your good bacteria
will be destroyed with this though and besides eating true acidophilis
yogurt and capsules you can add a product called ADP that will kill
candida if you have it. Acidophilis can't get rid of candida though it can
help control it once it is gone. You can ask your ENT for a blood test for
systemic candida though many physicians don't believe it exists. Mine was
negative though my sinus cultures came back positive for candida,
pseudomonas, and staph which we have normally and mine were out of
control. Good luck and let us know what you find. Trudy.
Hello,
Yeah, like dogs "normally" have fleas . . .
Kids "normally" have headlice . . .
Scabbies . . .
Crabs . . .
Did you know Leprosy has been recently classified as
as parasitic - they should re-name it "Israel" . . .
Yes. Normal. We have many bacteria in our bodies that when in check don't
cause any problems...it is the overgrowth that gets us in trouble. Go to a
microbiology site and look up all "normal" bacteria in the body...you'll
be amazed. Trudy.
Hello,
Cows' milk is bad (really bad for babies). The sugar
in the cows' milk is for a thousand-pound animal, so
overwhelms humans - think goats' milk.
Organic yogurt willnot hurt you, and is the only way you
can get real acidophilus, and/or to get it to work. I
wish they made it in goats' milk or better yet soy milk
or rice milk etc. Very often the "pill" etc. you purchase off
the shelf is dead by time you take it. I took an antibiotic
that gave me such pain in the colon i had to go to the
emergency room. While there i began to get my brains back,
and realized i should be taking acidophilus for the pain.
I fled from there and purchased the best and most expensive
you can purchase (i use to take it but stopped), and it did
nothing to stop the pain; then more of my brains started to
come back (amazing what real pain will do for the mind), and
i remembered why i had stopped taking that worthless stuff.
Finally i went to the grocery store; purchased organic yogurt;
ran out to the car and ate; by time i got home the pain was
all gone . . . Soooooo, you have no choice - yogurt it is
if you want the acidophilus to work for you.
