If you have chronic sinus problems, you should see an ENT. It's
impossible to know what should be done for sinus problems until an ENT
has a chance to actually examine you.

Claritin may dry out sinuses to be good long term

Claririn may be contributing to the filling in.

The nasal spray normally has no side effects, Try Flonase nasal spray instead
of the inhaler. You can use it long term.

Not for the nasal spray.

Hello,
Welcome, Peter,
In the wee hours of the morning when all is dark and still,
the little mold pods begin to explode and shoot their fuzzy,
little spores all over your house, up and away they fly and
float right up your nose . . .
http://www.usaweekend.com/99_issues/991205/991205mold.html#1
To get your house checked for mold, contact the American Industrial
Hygiene Association for a referral to a certified industrial
hygienist (703-849-8888, or www.aiha.org).
Testing costs $200-$500.
Or better yet just buy an ozone machine:
http://www.air-zone.com/order.asp
They advise the XT-6000. I think they
just raised the price since a few
days ago, because i donot remember
its costing that much (just over $700).
Start with that and stay away from irrigation.
By all means get off steroids. They cause awful
health problems in the long run. I am surprised
your mother never told you this . . . This
irrigation they are pushing here in this group
is dangerous, and you have no way of sterilizing
the contraption. You wind up forcing all kinds of
dangerous bacteria and fungus deep into your sinuses.
In other words the spores that wind up in your nostrils
will be forced deep into your skull if you irrigate
with force. JUST STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!! A delicate
mist of a salt solution could be a little helpful,
however it willnot solve the problem. You would do
better by going to the beach and breathing in the
sea air - much safer . . . Really. Get the ozone
generator!!!! They also have O-zone bulbs, which i
am going to use until credit card sez i can get the
ozone generator. I had a demonstration with an ozone
contraption before my surgery, and the blood in my
nose stopped, plus i could sleep better even though
i was in terrible condition. I didnot purchase the
machine at the time because, as usual, money, and
instead got air filters and cleaners. Now i know i
need the ozone mega mold buster . . . Oh well . . .
Just learn from others mistakes - good luck . . .

I have Celiac disease and have had allergies from childhood. I take
Claritin too, but it does not help me during the night for blocked
sinus's. I take Aleve to get them to start to drain in the morning after
I eat.
I still have my allergies (seasonal is the worst) and living gluten free
has not changed them.

Peter,
Steroid inhalers should not contribute to weight gain as the amount of
meds in them is pretty low. Coticosteroids can cause weight gain as they
are taken systemically. I have been off and on Prednisone, Prednisolone,
Medrol, for 23 years...this time for over 3 months starting with 60 mg. a
day. I have gained 30 lbs. without changing my diet or exercise routine.
As I taper off the meds the weight starts coming down and I believe it is
a lot of water weight. You really need to see an ENT and get a proper
diagnosis and treatment for relief. I know it is hard to get used to
taking meds daily but sometimes that is the only way after you have
exhausted all other avenues..ie: removing allergens, removing foods that
trigger reactions. A sinus wash in the evening and morning could remove
all that gunk and keep your sinus healthier. I use the NEIL system but you
need to see the ENT to get it. You can in the meantime use something from
the local pharmacy with a solution of water, kosher salt, and baking soda.
The pharmacist should be able to help you. You can also buy premixed
saline to use but making your own is way cheaper. I use 1 Quart H2O, 1
Teaspoon Kosher Salt, 1/4 Teaspoon Baking Soda and it clears me out for
the day. Make an appointment soon and let us know what happens. Good luck.
Trudy.

I am curious - why do you take it then?
I
t may aggravate blocked sinuses......

I agree. Has anyone else found that Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec are useless?
Allegra gives some relief though my insurance balks at paying for it.

It controls the sneezing and itchy eyes. Sometimes my eyes get so
itchy that I have to wash the lashes with baby shampoo. This was
recommended by my eye doctor.
My MD recommended me to use it, and it just melts in your mouth. It
works faster as it does not pass through your stomach first. {non-drowsy
anthistimine)
My hubby's MD recommend he take Claritin also- allergy to the scrub
pines in our area. He takes meds for high blood pressure. No
decongestants with his meds.
