Update - I'm Heading to Mayo Clinic

Well after attempting to get approval from my insurance (Health Net).
They would not cover any of my expenses to go to Mayo. One of the
claims people there recommended that I go see her allergist here in
town before I spend all my money going to mayo. I agreed to see him.
I had my appoinment with him yesterday. Finally! A doctor that knows
what he is doing I think. Hes got a plan and he actually gave me a
diagnosis. Chronic Sinisitus! We went over my history as well as going
over my CT scans from the last few years. On my last CT scan there
were signs of improvements after using antibiotics for 6 weeks. For
this reason he says that he wants me to possably do a 3 to 6 month
course of 4 to 5 different antibiotics. This will ensure that we get
all the different strains of known bacteria. I'm not sure why my last
doc stopped the antibiotics after seeing the improvements in the CT
scans?
This new allergist thinks I may also have a fungal problem as well
based on my symptoms and is suggesting that I may need to have a
culture done and then if needed treat the fungus with Prednisone.
Prednisone scares me and I'm not so sure that I will be able to take
that. He says that Prednizone is the only way to treat it. I already
have a bad right hip due to cortizone injections I had in the early
90's. I'm to afraid that I could do more joint damage by taking
prednizone. I'll have to wait and see what happens in the next few
months and then make a decision. At that point I may think about going
to Mayo again because I don't think they are treating fungal sinusitis
with prednizone.
So it looks as though I won't be off to Mayo this year after all. I
plan to stick with this guy over the next few months and see where
that gets me. I start the antibiotic Augmentin XR today. I'm very
happy to have found someone that believes he can help. He told that he
has been doing this for 30 years and he believes that this is the
correct course of action and that if I follow his directions I will
see a 95% improvement in symptoms.

That's because the new Mayo Clinic theory is different than the
traditional view of fungal sinusitis.

BTW, when you go out there, if they prescribe topical Amphtericin B,
make sure you can tolerate it before you go back home. I was never able
to tolerate it, because it cannot be mixed with saline. My runny nose
and post nasal drip got much worse from my body's reaction to the stuff.

This is great news. I've never heard of treating a fungus infection
with prednisone - that's a new idea to me. I thought prednisone just
treated inflammation - it kills fungus too?

Where are you? Who is this wonderful allergist? It sounds like he is
really interested in your case and is going to systematically work
with you to help and has confidence in his plan. I'd love to find
someone like that around here. I wonder if he might be able to make a
referral to an allergist around where I live - Cleveland, Ohio - or
give some pointers on how to find an 'allergist'. This guy sounds like
a 'sinus specialist' of sorts. Something we need more of.

I've found nothing but general practitioners and ENT's. The GP's seem
to know two things to do for you - a Zpack of antibiotics and maybe
some Steriod nasal spray. I made the mistake early on of stressing how
anxious my sinus problems are making me because of the severe negative
impact on my life and that has been dogging me all along. It's in my
records and I think I've been labelled as a hypochondriac of sorts.
But I've never had any interest or concern about diseases or anything
like that before this affliction kicked my a.s and I've never faked an
illness before. That's just not my game.

The ENT's I've seen have been fairly flip and apathetic - each pretty
rushed to just get onto their next patient - terse replies to any
questions - few or no suggestions or guidance - just an indication
that yes I'm inflammed, swollen, very small openings in nasal passages
- but no indication or guess as to WHY. A CT scan showed
pristine/clear sinus cavities and that one turbinate was kind of
twisted around - a 'birth defect' of sorts. One ENT suggested possible
turbinate reduction surgery, another at least tried to be helpful
suggesting options short of surgery and gave me a recipe for nasal
irrigation solution, a script to prednisone and an allergy spray
called Astelin, the third ENT I've seen merely told me I'm far too
concerned and obsessed with the whole problem and that I should drop
all the therapies I've been trying since they don't seem to be doing
much to improve my condition and go see a psychiatrist! I explained
it's hard not to be obsessed when you can't breath thru your nose and
sleep becomes extremely difficult and you just get run down and
depressed the longer it drags on - but this last guy seems to think
it's pretty much a matter that I've blown things way out of
proportion.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there is something out there like a SINUS
SPECIALIST - whose primary focus is on sinus disorders. It sounds like
this allergist you found is in that zone and that just seems like the
perfect person you'd want working with you to resolve your case.

I've had some of the same responses from ENT's in my area. One of them
said I was too obsessive compulsive and should see a shrink. I had
already tried that route before seeing him and it led nowhere.

BTW, I'm in Sacramento California. I think this Allergist that I am
seeing may be practicing some of the techniques out of Stanford. He
mentioned Stanford quite a few times during my first visit. If you
like, you can email me and I can give you his contact info if you
like.

Hello,

"Prednisone, a corticosteroid" (steroid/cortisone). It makes fungus
worse. Antibiotics make fungus worse.

Congratulations!
I think you have met the one-man mother-load of all charlatans.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a601102.html#why.
Go back to Mayo . . .

BTW. The sucker will find no fungus - betcha . . .

We are on our own, so go here:
http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/afung.html

Above all else keep your digestive system in perfect condition,
it is your only salvation agsinst the onslaught of these quakes.
Your local Health Food Store is your only friend.

Lysterine sprayed in the nasal passage will help get rid of
bacteria. Also bactine. Salt solution (fine mist) is good, and
will help. When all else fails think gentian violet spray or drops.
Fresh air and walking will help. What about the kitty litter box.
Lotrimine is a life saver for me. My real help is from the remedies
from the health food store. Donot forget garlic and yougurt -
your life depends on it.

There is a war going on about this fungus in the sinuses,
and we donot have time to fight it, so avoid it - skirt around
it - save yourself anyway you can . . .
