The steroids just reduce inflammation, so if you can reduce inflammation by
some "other* means (probaby eliminating the allergen exposure that is causing
the inflammation) , you may also regain smell and taste.

6 years ago lost my sense of smeel /taste. Polyps removed etc. about 3
years ago with limited success. Tried lots of anti biotics for 2
years - still limited succes . Similarly to you it always improved
after taking an oral steroid to reduce swelling. I have an allergy to
cats , but haven't had a cat for 2 years, ENT consultant told me to
take "flixonase" for at least 6 months before seeing him again. At
the moment I can smell reasonably well thru one nostril although i
still have days where i wake up with no sense of smell, so there may
still be hope for u yet

Don, I wish I knew some other means of reducing the inflammation. I am
allergic to dust mites. Have had the air ducts in my home professionally
cleaned, bought new mattresses, used the dust mite coverings, bought a
hepa air filter, etc. I have been on allergy shots for 2 years and can't
tell they have done a bit of good. If you know of something that might
help please let me know!

Well you have certainly made just about every effort.
Let me ask you this, though. Do you ever go on vaction for two weeks? Was it
better then?

I do go on vacation - in fact I spent most of the summer at the beach. I
do feel better there but still have symptoms. It's hard to tell because a
lot of the time I was on antibiotics and steroids while I was there. I do
think my house causes problems - whenever my son comes home from college
he has terrible allergies but yet when he is up in the mountains at VT he
is perfect and does not even need his medications. I seriously am
thinking of selling the house and moving to the beach!

It 's probably just that particular house - there may be mold somewhre or
roaches etc....
Make sure that you ventilate as much as possible,
When climate permits, try sitting near an open window, or use fans blowing air
out another window. Often this can substitute for air conditioning. It has
made an enormous differnece to me.
