Upcoming Surgery

I am scheduled for surgery on the 30th of this month.  I have severe
sinus polyps and they tell me that the surgery will take about 4
hours.  I am terrified at this point!

I am a single Mom and have no idea what to expect in regards to
recovery time with this.  I really don't have time to lay around for
long.

I have read about the packing in your sinuses, but how long does it
stay in?  I have had two endoscopes done in the office in the past two
weeks and they were not pleasant experiences!

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.  They did tell me to plan
on being in the hospital for at least one night.

Thanks in advance,

Laurie

Make sure you have someone responsible around to watch your
child.  I was absolutely miserable for 2-3 days largely due
to the anesthesia and packing.  I was in so much pain and so
far away from my ENT that he told me to pull out the packing.
That was one painful and nasty experience.  The packing caused
me severe headaches and I couldn't sleep but desperately needed
to.

It depends on the surgeon - mine removed them the next morning.

You can call his/her nurse and ask what they do.

They should not be uncomfortable.

That's a good sign they they will arrange that.   It's just for observation..

Recovery is not really a big issue - you won't need to literally lie but will
be out of sorts for a week or two.   It's not unpleasant.

Laurie,

Are you absolutely sure that this surgery is the final and only
alternative you have???

*Any* 'surgery' is going to be absolutely uncomfortable and even
potentially dangerous. You must always remember that every person who
wants to do surgery on you has a financial interest in doing the
surgery, unless of course you have found a doc who will do the surgery
for free. Have you?? I sincerely doubt it.

Have you had a second opinion. One of the most valuable things a
candidate for surgery can do is to get a second opinion. But of course
there is a brotherhood between docs. If one of them says you need
surgery then they all will normally agree. Its the courtesy of the
brotherhood. It is rare to find a doc who will go against the grain
and say lets try this before the surgery.

Every ENT doc I have ever been to says I have a 'deviated septum' and
need surgery. I have never had surgery. I have lived with the
'deviated septum' for 64 years without any problems. Is it possible
that you could live with these 'polyps'?

Have you done some heavy research on the internet about the 'polyps'?

Have you tired every other resource to make sure the surgery is
needed? If the surgery is postponed for a week will you life be
threatened? Two weeks? Etc. etc. etc.

You are responsible for the decisions you make concerning your health.
No one else. If the surgery goes bad and there is a problem, you are
just another statistic to this doc. He/she has liability insurance and
any claim you may have will just be turned over to the insurance
carrier and the doc will be doing the same surgery the next day. I
guarantee it.

New treatments are being discovered everyday in all health matters.
Just recently Mayo Clinic discovered fungus is the cause of most sinus
infections and the treatments for all sinus infections changed.

Is it possible the treatment for 'polyps' will change tomorrow??

Think about it and good luck.

Thankfully I have had no experience with 'polyps' but I have had lots
of experience with the medical docs and I know what I speak of.

The federal government says that some 87,000 deaths are caused every
year because of medical errors. Don't be one of them.

Stand up and think for yourself and speak out.

Take care.

Laurie, I  had polyps 8 years ago and my MD shrunk them with Meds.

They have never grown back to this day.

It was 8 years ago and I do not remember what the drug name was at that
time.

I do not keep my medical records back that far. She was a good MD too.
She retired and has moved away.

You should not mis-state research hypotheses as fact.

Laurie, I had surgery because of polyps last February and had no problems
whatsoever.  I woke up in the recovery room able to breathe through my
nose, in no pain and only stayed for 3 hours afterward.  I did not need
the dressing under the nose at all and did not take one single pain pill.
We are all different.  I had a good experience but sadly I am going
through the same symptoms once again.  I felt great for a few months
afterward but then started again with infections and stuffiness, etc.  My
ENT used gel packing so it dissolved on it's on.  The only part of this
surgery that was uncomfortable was the visits to the ENT to remove scabs.
Good luck and let us know how you did.

The first couple of days, you are liable to be indisposed.  You need to
find someone to take care of your child, unless your child is old enough
that he can fend for himself for that time period.

Even after that, you are liable to feel fatigued for a couple of weeks.
If your child is at the young age where you have to run around a lot
keeping after him, you may want to ask a friend or relative to assist
you with housework for that time period.

Varies.  My physician removed mine in 48 hours.

Laurie, I posted a response but it got lost in cyberspace...again. That
keeps happening to me. Anyway, each person has their own unique experience
with surgery. Depending on the type and length of surgery your recovery
could be from a few days to a few weeks. I personally have had five
surgeries in the past three years. Two were Caudel Luc's (through the
mouth), two FESS and Instatrak. I am told to not bend, lift, or strain for
three weeks. The packing used is taken out the day after surgery and it
looks like a large foamy tampon, much more comfortable than the guaze. I
am instructed to take my painkiller before the pain hits and use it before
my post-ops as they remove crusts and that is not fun. I too am VERY
sensitive to endoscopic care though the soft scope isn't so bad. The
rigi-scope however is my mortal enemy along with that suctioning. I just
tell my ENT to numb me up good or we won't get through it. Each person has
a level of pain tolerance so your recovery will be your own. Let us know
what happens, how it goes, and how you feel. Also, has your ENT exhausted
medical treatment first? I am currently on: Prednisone 60mg. daily,
Singulair, Advair, NasaCrom, Atarax, Allegra, Albuterol, and Zantac. I do
have many other health issues besides the sinusitis though. They include
Samter's Triad, Asthma, Chronic Myalgia, and Chronic Hives...plus
Mucoceles that surgery can get rid of. Good luck and keep us posted!
Trudy.
