sychotron: Thank you for that post. I thought I was the only one that
had it really bad with polyp disease. I have had five surgeries so far
because of a mucocele that eroded my orbit floor. I was told the same
thing about infection, that I was about 1/2 away from a major brain
infection. Surgery saved my life. I still have to have my socket
repaired. Where did you go for this and were you 100% happy with the
results? Trudy.
can you explain what a mucocele is?
thanks,

A mucecele is like a cyst filled with epithelial cells, at least mine are.
They erode bone if left too long. I have one in my right maxillary and one
under my left eye that eroded through my orbit floor and broke it. Most
are found in the ethmoid sinus and wear through the top of the orbit if
given time to. Mine is very rare in that most ENT's in this country (USA)
have not seen one that broke the orbit floor. I started with chronic polyp
disease in all sinus cavities and advanced to this. People who have had
trauma to their sinus usually end up with mucoceles later in life. I was
in an accident when I was 13 that crushed my face...more on the left than
the right. They put me back together pretty well (I would attach my pic
but don't know how!) but later I learned my sinus never developed beyond
that (hypoplastic sinus) and I have no landmarks to guide a surgeon as to
where he is when doing surgery. I guess it is a more scientific way of
saying cyst! Since mine are filled with different cells than most I get
tested for cancer often and sometimes they overgrow pseudomonas which can
cause sepsis, and can be very dangerous. I had periorbital cellulitis the
first time they discovered it and that was scary as the infection was very
near my brain stem. That is why they watch me closely now, doing CT Scans
regularly and surgery quite often. Trudy.
