I am soooo miserable. I have a deviated septum, as well as extremely swollen
turbinates in my nose. My face has been swelling for sometime, however it has
gotten to the point where i feel like a balloon and the slightest puncture from
a pin will just pop my face wide open. I go to the doctor and they give me
steroidal nasal spray and antibiotics. the spray causes my nose to bleed. The
only thing that has helped at all was the antibiotic. It would reduce the
swelling for a few days after i've taken it all. Just enough to make me feel a
sense of relief, but a few days later i'm right back where i started. I have
changed doctors so much i'm sick of it. It's like instead of the doctors trying
to find out what's wrong with me they just push these drugs at me, and none of
it works.
   I am desperate, i need some answers. i'm beginning to feel helpless and i
don't like that feeling. Someone please help me. I Need answers.
                          Thanks for listening, and i hope someone can help.
PS.  I also have High blood pressure and a mitral valve prolaspe that
regurgitates.

I would find the best ENT your area has to offer and if they can't
diagnos/treat to your satisfaction I would find the best ENT elsewhere. I
live in Northern Michigan and was referred out to either David Kennedy or
Donald Lanza, two of the best in this country. One was a 14 hour drive,
one an eight hour drive. Now I will be going to U of M Medical Center only
four hours away as my ent/surgeon has moved to Florida. It is worth it to
find the best and get better. Ask your doctor who he would go to if he had
your problems. Trudy.

    Thanks Trudy, I am at the point where i am willing to go anywhere i need
to get to the root of the  problem and get me better.
   I have been to so many doctors so far that i am beginning to get what i see
as doctor blackballing. I pulled some medical records because my friend is
encouraging me to go to Mayo clinic., When i looked at my medical records it
made me sicker than i have ever been. Some of the doctors that is stopped
seeing documented my records to make it appear as though it is all in my head.
I really resented that. Some of the records showed ct scans that were not
normal, but i could interpret them. Anyone can look at me and tell that it's
not in my head. Just imagine medical records going from doctor to doctor with
that type of documentation. I question why it was done and if where ever i go
from here should i give them access to the records or should i try to get them
to start fresh, as though i had never seen a doctor before. This is really
difficult for me. What do you think?

I think first you should know there are a lot of us out here with the same
symptoms, disease, issues, and fears. I know the depression that comes
with chronic illness and inept medical care, so hang in there. Some
sinusitis is life long even with the best treatment. Relief can be found
even if it is for a shorter period than you would like. That is a tricky
situation as far as your records. Starting over is no fun but if you have
someone that is superior in the ENT field they will run the right tests
and prescribe the right course of treatment for you. I look at medical
care like I look at making a major purchase...I am the consumer and I want
the best for my money. If you had a child going through the same issues
you would seek out and find answers and you would never give up until you
found satisfaction. You deserve that for yourself as well. Get online and
see who is available in your area that has a great reputation as an ENT
and call them and see if they are taking new patients. Good luck and let
us know what happens. Trudy.

Hi,
When you take records from one doctor to another,  you could just have lab
results (if any) and copies of scans sent.  No need to send notes as that's
mainly their impressions, which as you have seen, are not always correct.  A
new doctor will still want to take his own history and discuss your symptoms
and previous treatments with you anyway.

Good luck.  I know how frustrating it can be.  I hope you find some good help
soon.

You need to see an otolaryngologist (ear-nose-throat) (ENT).
He will do a CT scan of your sinuses and probably a nasal endoscopy as
well, and decide how best to treat your condition.

Sorry to hear about your misery. Hope that you can find relief somehow,
someway.

I've had serious problems with my sinuses, asthma and heart condition for
decades. I found out that anything that I breathe, anything that touches my
skin, and anything that I eat or drink can cause my allergies to get worse,
my blood pressure to increase, or my heart to misfire.

I am very sensitive to allergens and chemicals. It has been extremely
difficult for me to get my health problems under control. While I haven't
been totally successful, I have made significant improvements in my health
by avoiding as many things as I can. I'll post some of the changes here in
hopes that it may be of help to you.

I wear gloves when I read to avoid touching the inks.

I wear a dust mask while sleeping, since the bed is the worst place for
allergies. I also wear the mask during times of increased symptoms.

I don't use fabric softeners for my clothes. There are many strong chemicals
in fabric softeners. The body is then exposed to "trace amounts" of these
many chemicals all day long. I also don't use detergents, only baking soda
to wash clothes.

I avoid artificial sweeteners.

I avoid cleaning chemicals, and as many other chemicals as I can.

I especially avoid dust.

I got rid of my wall-to-wall carpeting, which significantly improved my
asthma.

I got rid of my upholstered furniture. It has helped quite a bit.

I don't eat any gravies or sauces unless home made.

I avoid takeouts.

I avoid lunch meats, or any frozen dinners. In other words, I greatly
simplify my diet.

I eat chicken or beef casseroles made of very simple ingredients and bunches
of salads with very simple and safe salad dressings.

Of course, I wouldn't expect you to follow all these ideas, if you are even
paying attention to this post, but you might read this, get ideas from it,
and then start to try to limit contact with as many allergens as you can.

I've also had many allergy shots, and took acupuncture treatments for my
sinuses, both of which really helped.

Regards, and best of luck and health to you.

University of Alabama at Birmingham is well-rated in ENT at

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/health/hosptl/rankings/specihqotol.htm

But you would need to call first and find out who is their most experienced
sinus specialist.   Tell them it is a difficult case.  (Often this is the
person who you have to wait longest to see so - do not insist on an early date
or you will get the least desirable doctor).

Cetainly you could also go  to Mayo or to another top place.

Personally I would not hide the existence of prior medical records.  It just
makes you seem  manipulative to them.   They do not pay that much attention to
them anyway.

Steroid spray should help.   Try cutting back the dosage if it bleeds (just
spray it once per nostril), or switching brands, and make sure you are aiming
right.

Your condition can be brought under control, but one just wants to avoid strong
medicine whenever possible to avoid its risks.

Odds are good that allergens and irritants are a strong comnponent of your
problems.  It will be strarting to cool off soon enough that you can open a
window.  Try running a fan out another window, drawing in air through the
windows where you are, continuously.   If this makes things better, then you
are sensitive to indoor allregens and irritants (dust, mold).

Hello,

University of Alabama, Birmingham, is starting to get into Mayo Clinic stuff,
so if you wait
long enough perhaps the mountain will come to Mohamad. Such will put the
fear of God into all
those quacks that are jerking you around. Of course it could just be that
they are afraid to touch you because of your high blood pressure and mitral
valve prolaspe that regurgitates, and are you dangerously over-weight . .
?

You poor child of pain and agony, making lots of cash money for all those
Doc?s. Please listen
to this: Insist your last ENT give you a fungus going over of, not only the
mucus in your nose and
sinuses, but your saliva also (i doubt if anyone will know how to do it properly,
so you will
probably get false readings).

Very important! Read all of this and, to the best of your ability, present
it to your Doc:

First thing for anyone with sinus trouble is to use and eat natural, organic
yogurt.
You cannot handle milk? Tough luck; there is no replacement, so try
the trade off, because perhaps you have allergy to begin with because
of the fungus.

Most fungi simply colonise the sinuses and sit there without causing any
inflammation.
Occasionally the fungi may invade the mucous membranes and provoke intense
inflammation
and allergic response. Even more rarely the fungi may invade the bones of
the facial skeleton
and damage blood vessels and nerves, even extending to the eye and brain

Therapy for the Amphotericin B deoxycholate, nose spray is:
3 months;
5 squirts each nostral;
2 times aday;
Another Possible Procedure, however using ONLY the 10-squirts worth, and
only done twice
aday, and remembering this MUST NOT be swallowed;
http://www.digitalnaturopath.com/cond/C55833.html
The Sinus Flooding Procedure:
a. Lay on a bed face up with the head hanging over the edge of the mattress
so the nostrils are
pointing straight up toward the ceiling.
b. Use an eye dropper to fill each nostril with the rinse solution. Keep
filling each nostril until
the rinse solution starts to drip in the throat. Remain in the same position
for 2 to 3 minutes.
c. Roll over on the stomach and let the head flop forward over the edge of
the mattress. Remain
in that position for 2 to 3 minutes then sit up and let the rinse drain out
through the nose.
(THIS FOLLOWING DOESNOT APPLY TO US AT THE PRESENT AND/OR UNTIL AN
ACTUAL "WASH" IS MADE AVAILABLE)
d. Important: Repeat this procedure 45 minutes later. The two rinses 45 minutes
apart constitute
a single rinse session. Perform two or more such rinse sessions per day.
Relief will typically be
noticeable by the second day. It is not unusual for the sinus infection to
be gone within three
days.
e. Repeat two sessions per day until the infection subsides. Very persistent
infections may
require five to seven day or more.
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Amphotericin B deoxycholate nasal spray/wash is shipped in a cold pack and
must be kept
refrigerated. Only a one month's supply at a time is available, because it
is so perishable,
however i finally found a "Dixie" Mayo Clinic near me and am now using the
"wash", not
"drops", and is $50.00 cheaper than the above-mentioned drugstore.
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Here are interesting statements i saw while rushing through the Internet.
It is nice to know if you
absolutely must put your life at risk with Amphotericin B, you can quickly
get off of it :

?Surgical treatment is mandatory. Initiate medical treatment with systemic
antifungals once
invasion is diagnosed. Amphotericin B (2 g/d) is recommended; this can be
replaced by
ketoconazole or itraconazole once the disease is under control?.

AND AGAIN:

?Acute invasive fungal sinusitis
Emergent treatment is necessary once this condition is suspected. Initiate
systemic antifungal
treatment after surgical debridement. High doses of amphotericin B (1-1.5
mg/kg/d) are
recommended. Oral itraconazole (400 mg/d) can replace amphotericin B once
the acute stage
has passed. Treatment of the underlying immune deficiency, if possible, is
desirable.?

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
The last thing i must say is unless you are on your death-bed,  use Amphotericin
B only as a
nasal spray/wash, because it can and has caused heart attack when taken internally
http://health.yahoo.com/health/ency/adam/003504/treatment
http://www.umc-cares.org/health_info/ADAM/Articles/003503.asp
Another thing: they say the body doesnot absorb the amphotericin B nasal
wash from the nose,
however i amnot nursing one hurtfulashell Gout, which i have never had in
my life, for nothing. I
called the Jacksonville drugstore and asked if Amphotericin B causes Gout,
and the liars said, no. Here is your proof that it does (hyperuricemia shows
up as Secondary Gout) under
"Adverse Reactions" (at the bottom, last line of the fine print):
http://www.cancernetwork.com/drugs/Abelcet.htm
Here is a picture of what i now look like:
http://www.aafp.org/afp/990215ap/925_f1.jpg
As soon as i stopped my Amphotericin B nasal wash, my sinuses showed yellow
discharge; the
Candida/Aspergillus is enjoying the lull, and i have now made an appointment
with the Mayo
Clinic, since this entire thing is their findings.
    This is a possibility, however i would hope, if this is the situation,
that the doctors would be kind enough and professional enough to just inform me
that i am in need of a physician that is more equipped to deal with patients
that require a more specialized level of care. That would have been better than
trying to make it look like it's all in my head.
   I do appreciate the help and encouragement. It's people like you all in
this group that makes me know that there is still a lot of good people in this
world.
