I have had this constant drainage down the back of my throat for 4
weeks..yellowish green..went to the doc's and she put me on antibiotics
for two weeks..nothing has changed, I have been smelling this odd odor in
my nose also..strange smell..it is the odor that I am most concerned with.
Went to a ENT doc last week...had a CTA scan today of my sinuses..has
anyone else ever experienced this? I have had no sinus pain or headach
associated with any of these symptoms..what could it be?? Help!!

Sounds like a sinus infection to me. What were the results of
the CT Scan?

I always get a strange odor in my
nose and head while inhaling during
a sinus infection.

sounds like postnasal drip.
the reason the antibiotic may not work is that the cliia are not doing their
job and not movng he bacteria out of the nose.
see ent-consult for some suggestions.

After suffering with multiple sinus infections, year after year, for
decades, I experimented with flooding my nasal passages with a mixture of
diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and kosher salt. In order to flood
my nasal passages and keep them flooded, I keep my forehead pointed
downward. I keep my forehead down for quite a while, hoping that the
anti-infective mixture can get to the infected area(s) within my sinuses and
nasal passages.
.
It works! I have been sinus infection free for about 3 years. I think that I
had chronic infection problems with my turbinates, so flooding my nasal
passages with the anti-infective mixture worked very well, for me, since the
infected areas were fairly easy to reach.
.
I have fully documented my experience and how I did it at Healthboards.com.
There are posts there by people who have tried my "upside down sinus
flooding" and have received either partial relief or total relief. There are
also posts there from those who it hasn't helped, and by those who don't
think that it is a good idea. I have no connection at all with Healthboards.
I use it because I consider it to be the best facility for discussing health
problems on the Internet.

I have always had that weird odor with infection also. I don't however have
sort of sense of smell for five years now unless I am on heavy prednisone.
Your CT Scan will tell what is going on...hopefully. Trudy.

Yes. In fact, for me those are the exact symptoms of an acute sinus
infection: Strange odor; yellow-green post nasal drip.
If neither the amoxicillin nor the Biaxin had any effect at all, then it
means that the infection is probably resistant to those two. Did your
ENT attempt to take a culture of some of the pus that was oozing out of
your sinuses?
If you seemed to show some improvement on either the amoxicillin or the
Biaxin, then you may not have taken them for a long enough period of
time to completely eradicate the infection. Sinus infections are very
stubborn. Once the right antibiotic is found, you often need to take it
for three weeks--or even longer. One week of any antibiotic is rarely
enough to cure a stubborn sinus infection.
There are other antibiotics to try. My ENT swears by Levaquin and Avelox.
Let us know how things turn out with you.

I am so happy to hear that this "smell in my nose" that I am experiencing
goes along with a sinus infection..this is the first really long lasting
infection I have ever had and the odd smell really concerned
me...hopefully my ENT will prescribe some strong acting antibiotics as
soon as she lets me know how my CTA scan went.. My GP refused to have me
take antibiotics longer than 2 weeks, stating that that was long enough to
take care of the infection..guess she has some things to learn about sinus
infections. Thanks for all the encouragement..

Print this web page out and show it to your doctor(s):
"Antibiotic penetration into the sinuses is typically relatively poor,
comparable to osteomyelitis. As a result, treatment generally must
continue for at least two weeks in acute sinusitis and at least three
weeks in chronic sinusitis. Six to eight weeks of treatment is not unusual."

that's when you don't add irrigation to the treatment. In our 5 person ENT
group, we rarely use antibiotic 6 weeks becuase we irrigate out the bacteria
and restore the cilia movement .

I have this smell in my sinuses alot of the time too. My ENT said this
is normal for someone with my condition. I'm not really sure what he
meant by that though. My Allergist recently had me try a 4 week course
of amoxacillan and then a 2 week course of tequin. Neither of them
seemed to do anygood unfortunatly. We are continueing to do the
allergy shots still. I may ask her about trying a stronger antibiotic
when we review my new CT scans. So far my alergist has been the most
helpful....My ENT has been little help at all.

recommend you ask your doctor about measures to increase mucociliary clearance.
If the cilia sweep the bacteria out of the nose, the smell goes away.

postnasal drip is not a sinus infecton. Antibiotics is not the treatment of
choice. See www.ent-consult.com re getting the clia moving to clear this up.
I am surprised no one else spoke of this.

I continue to use you irrigator daily at the request of my doctors for
the last year and half. I have not seen any benefit in it easing my
symptoms yet.

I agree. My Allergist and I just looked at more recent CT scans and
she said that there was less signs of mucus in the films this time but
I continue to experience problems still.
