I went to another ent today to get a 2nd opinion on the smell that I get
and how I can taste it. Biggest waste of my time. The ENT said I
probably have a brain abnormality and that its something that cannot be
fixed, therefore I must live with it. I dont know whether to be mad or to
cry or to laugh. I would think if i had a brain abnormality it would have
shown up in my ct scan a few months ago for migraines! How can a brain
abnormality cause your smell and taste to be messed up?

I guess I must have a brain abnormality too...
IMHO, the ENT is the one with the brain abnormality. Telling you to
live with it isn't a good "bedside manner." I wonder if the ENT would
tell their loved ones to live with it...

A brain abnormality?? Probably most of us here have that same "brain
abnormality" to some degree. What kind of exam did this guy perform before
making that grand statement? When one considers how small the opening in
the cribriform plate is, it's a wonder that any molecules get through to
allow a sense of smell in anyone. It doesn't take too severe an
inflammation to diminish one's sense of smell (and therefore taste), as
anyone with a cold will comfirm, let alone someone with chronic sinusitis.
In _rare_ instances, anosmia is the result of some brain pathology, but
usually it's the result of inflammation/infection, or structural problems in
the sinuses.

I have had enough personal experience with that particular "brain
abnormality" that I can actually differentially diagnose a simple common
cold vs. bacterial sinusitis.
When I get a common cold, the phlegm (which I can smell inside of me)
has a special smell and taste--smells a bit like cheese or like those
"No-Pest Strip" insecticides they used to sell.
When I get a bad case of bacterial sinusitis, the smell is
different--when I blow my nose it actually smells like rotten meat
inside of me.

He used the scope .... He said he could see why my current ent did the
surgery in the first place on the right side of my nose ... he said though
that side still had a cell that had stuff in it. The left side he said
was blocked, according to my ct scan that I had done back in May. And, he
wasnt the most gentlest person putting that scope in on the left side ...
yes,he used a numbing spray, but it still hurt and still does a little!
He said it was because it was swollen. He then came to the conclusion
that I dont need to have any more surgeries, and didnt smell anything bad
coming from my sinuses. He asked me if anyone else could smell what I
smell and I said no, and not to my knowledge, that only I can. So, that's
when he made the grand statement. Either way, Im going back to my ent
(the one who did my surgery) on the 21st for a follow up and see what he
thinks of that nice statement. I did research tonight on smell disorders
and a lot of the sites say they come from within the sinuses like you said
.. with infections, etc or also head injuries. But, i've never had a
head injury.
