No advice here beyond what's been posted recently, but I can certainly
relate to the feeling you describe.

>POLYPS - how do you stop them? <
Hi Mike
After many polyp removal ops, I have had a good reduction in Polyp growth,
using Singulair and steroid nasal sprays.(Nasonex) These sprays do not
have the side-effects that Prednisone has.
I don't think that the fungal infection causes polyps, but the polyps
prevent proper drainage, giving a perfect environment for the infection to
grow in.
Regards David.

This is correct Rx but you still must dust proof the bedroom, and avoid all
salicylates.
And get Rx when there is nasal infection.

Mike, I am a carbon copy of what you are going through! I had sinus
surgery in Feb. of this year only to be told about a month ago that the
polyps have returned. I knew they had, stuffed up nose, no taste or smell
and all that good stuff. I did develop adult onset asthma at age 48. I
have never suffered from allergies or asthma before in my life and wonder
how all this started. I too have been taking prednisone which I know only
works while you are taking it and doesn't at all solve the problem. It's
only a bandaid for awhile and then you are back to square one. I have an
appointment Tues. with my ENT to see what else can be done besides the
steroids. I think my next step is the homeopathic approach. I need to
get to the root of the problem not just keep going on and off steroids for
the rest of my life. I also use Nasalcort, Singulair and Advair daily
plus nasal irrigation twice a day. I have been taking allergy shots for
almost 2 years and I can't see that they have done a bit of good.
Supposedly the only thing I'm allergic to is dust mites. I'm just
wondering if maybe we don't have some type of fungus and that is causing
our problems. I'll be anxious to see what my ENT says. I don't think
that has ever come up in any diagnosis but the more I read about it the
more I am suspecting it. Will keep you posted on any news or info. I get
this week.

Lucy and everyone else that replied, Thanks. Lucy, you must go
to Asthmastory.com and read the info there.
The reason I want you to read that website is obviously because you
have adult onset asthma but beyond that you also have polyps. For me
it started around age 30 with asthma and sinus polyps all at once.
After 2 sinus surgeries and polyps returning immediately both times
despite every steroid spray available, singular, advair 50/500, and
short courses of prednisone, I am ready to try the treatment outlined
in Asthmastory.com. My ultimate hope would be that the antibiotic
treatment would cure the asthma and stop the polyps. Are you
sensitive to aspirin? I never was but I am also going to be checked
by my allergist. I do get an even stuffier nose if I drink alcoholic
beverages so does this mean I am sensitive to salicylates? This is
the final question left for me.
TO ENTCONSULT: If it turns out I am sensitive to salicylates will
avoiding them and continuing a steroid spray shrink the polyps or
would I have to have the polyps removed again and then avoid
salicylates?
Thank you,
Mike

Patients differ. If you stop the salicyliates you are removing a cause.
Personally I have no way of predicting which patient which have a fantastic
result with prednisoe and antibiotic. Hope it works for you.

Hey Mike, I'm really not sure if I am sensitive to aspirin or not - that is
something I will definitely check out my next visit to my allergist. I
too have a terrible reaction to alcohol so I just avoid it now - no big
loss but every now and then a glass of wine would be nice but it's not
worth the misery. I did go to Asthmastory and read all the information.
I would LOVE to think that there is something that would cure us for good!
I will bring all of this up tomorrow with my ENT and see what he
suggests. Will let you know.

Went to my ENT yesterday and of course I knew what he would do... 60 mg.
prednisone for 4 days, then down to 40 mg. for 4 days, etc. Plus
Augmentin for 14 days. He did use the endoscope and said he didn't really
see polpys but inflammation and lots of mucous in my frontal sinuses but
the others were clear. So he is hoping the short burst of steroids and
antibiotics will clear it up - it will but within 6 weeks I guarentee it
will all return. So do I just do this regime off and on forever? I will
take all the meds this time but this will be it for the steriods. Just in
a day's time I can tell the difference and could probably eat the house
down. Trying to control myself though since I still have 8 more days of
them - ugh. So my next step?? Who knows...not too happy.

Hello,
Mayo Clinic has found 96% of sinus trouble is fungus.
They now newly found Amphoterican B deoxycholate, nasal,
lavage wash does the trick. This is a new therapy (2 years is "new"). I just
got mine. Will keep the group posted.

Please do. Maybe it will work for you (you'd be the first that has so reportd
inth is newsgroup).
However, the research paper was published in 1999.
Sinus fungi are found in the entire population. What the research
*hypothesis* was is that some people may *react* badly to the fungi. So
their reaction would be the problem, not the fungi.
SInus overgrowth by fungus is a different problem, found in immunocompromised
patients
If you go to http://www.mayoclinic.com/ and search on sinusitis, you will get
lots of discussions of surgical and medical options, and no mention whatsoever
of fungus.
