Hi,

I have had a permanently blocked nose for about 7 years. What happens
is that one nostril is always clear, whilst the other is blocked (and
it changes from side to side). My ENT made me do a CT scan which
showed that I had a deviated septum. He said that septoplasty would
greatly reduce my breathing difficulties. I had the operation in
January this year. I would say that the operation has helped me about
30% - at times I can breathe perfectly but mostly I still have
trouble.

Is there anything else someone can suggest that might help me breathe
better? What do you think is causing the blockage? I have had allergy
tests but nothing seems to show up.

Thanks,
Peter.

The alternation is normal - it happens to everyone.

The *complete* blockage just means that your turbinates are enlarged.

No surprise there to me.   Septoplasty would help *at most* on *one* side only.

Nasal steroid spray, and avoidance of dust, pollution, irritants and potential
allergens.

Keep a mnetal diary of when your nose really opens up wide, and when it closes
up (which actually means the turbinates swell up out of irritation).  You will
learn a lot and may be able to eventually fix your problem.

Odds are good that dust and mould (or worse yet smoke) are involved....

It is possible that one of the medications you are using is making it worse.
for example, saline with preservatives often cause congestion.
