Folks,

For a couple of years now I have had a condition my doctor says is
ETD, but having read deja.com a bit and a bit of a discussion with
folks in an ETD group, I wonder if my doc has got it wrong, and its
actually Sinusitis.

Basically, in my left ear I get a "crackling" noise, a bit like when
you get water in your ear after bathing etc... The noise is not
continuous - it needs something to trigger it - typically loud noise,
or if I touch my ear, or sometimes even, my cheek when symptoms and
noise produced are particularly bad. Sometimes the condition lasts for
just a few hours, sometimes days - similarly I may go just a few hours
with no problem, sometimes days!

The one thing that led me to believe it may actually be sinusitis is
that it usally is at its worst first thing in the morning.

Any thoughts welcomed - and suggestions for a cure DEFINITELY invited!

Thanks to you all in advance

Steve

Sinusitis, post nasal drip is a common cause of eustachian tube dysfunctin
have you tried antiinflmallatories?
Ask your doctor about using Clear-ease.

Well that could just be wax in the ear.

*Snip*

Don, my GP has examined my ear several times.... no wax... also, a
hearing test has shown no (or at least, negligable) hearing loss...
I'm totally stumped as to what it is....

Any other suggestions welcomed!

Cheers

Well it could be that you indeed do have a Eustacian Tube issue.

Since you hear it,  I think it is indeed in that area.   I don't think a sinus
connection is likely, although you could have an infection from one migrating
to the other.

I would be careful about trying to do anything radical about it such as
surgery.  The "cure might be worse than the disease."    It may go away in
time.

I have had it too.

The opening of the Eustacian tube is probably inflamed or infected or ....

I had a mild  hearing loss for literally years in one ear, including
hyperacusis etc.
A number of  "ENT's" told me there was nothing abnormal.
I had ETD diagnosed by one "ENT"  using sophisticated instrumentation.
"Abnormally patent" I think he said.

Then it went away.  I do not think this area is completely understood.

You woudl have to get more second opinions if you really wanted to pursue it.

(I put "ENT" in quotes because I cannot stand that abbreviation because it is
technically incorrect diction to call  a doctor by a  list of body parts)
