Since '97, I've had an odor that I can smell and taste.  I can't describe
it other than it's nasty.  Last year, I went to my primary doctor and they
did a ct scan.  It showed fluids in my sinuses, so they prescribed biaxin,
which did not work.  In august I saw an ent, and he gave me augmentin,
guafacien, and presdindone to see if he could erradicate it.  That did not
work, so my last resort, or so I thought, was surgery.  In November 2003,
I had sinus surgery, which my ent opened up my nasal passage and took out
a big cyst.  It's been almost 6 months now, and I am still having the same
bad smell and taste.  It's coming from my sinuses.. that I do know.  Last
month, I saw an allergist who tested me for allergies and I have none, so
that ruled out allergies.  He had me get a ct scan and they put me on
zithromax for a week for a supposedly mild sinus infection.  So, I went
back to my ent and the nurse read my ct scan films and said it showed
none, but to continue it. At thetime, the bad stink went away but came
back.  Today, she gave me gentamicin to irrigage with.  She told me it
should help but to see the ent, which I go see anyways in July.  What is
causing this and how do I get it to permanently go away for good?  There
are some days it will go away for a few days, but then it comes back and
wont go away no matter how much water i drink or brush and listerine.
What kind of sinus issue am i dealing with?  Im at the end of my rope.

Keep us posted on what the gentamicin does for you.

I agree keep with the irrigation until all symptoms are gone and
continue after that for about a week. It sounds like that might do the
trick. Many pathogens give off a foul odor. good luck

It almost sounds like an undertreated sinus infection.  My ENT
has told me that some sinus infections require six weeks on an
antibiotic.  Could be you see some relief from the antibiotics
when you're on them, but because they don't completely eradicate
the infection, it all comes back again.  Maybe you should try
switching doctors or at least see someone for a second opinion.

Did anyone check you for fungal (mycotic) infection?
ENTconsult - 04 Jun 2004 05:48 GMT
when ;your cilia are not functioning well, ou can get a build up of bacteria
due to the stasis. In many casies it is  a matter of getting the cilia moving
properly.

After suffering with multiple sinus infections, year after year, for
decades, I experimented with flooding my nasal passages with a mixture of
diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and kosher salt. In order to flood
my nasal passages and keep them flooded, I keep my forehead pointed
downward. I keep my forehead down for quite a while, hoping that the
anti-infective mixture can get to the infected area(s) within my sinuses and
nasal passages.
.
It works! I have been sinus infection free for about 30 months. I think that
I had chronic infection problems with my turbinates, so flooding my nasal
passages with the anti-infective mixture worked very well, for me, since the
infected areas were fairly easy to reach.
.
I have fully documented my experience and how I did it at Healthboards.com.
There are posts there by people who have tried my "upside down sinus
flooding" and have received either partial relief or total relief. There are
also posts there from those who it hasn't helped, and by those who don't
think that it is a good idea. I have no connection at all with Healthboards.
I use it because I consider it to be the best facility for discussing health
problems on the Internet.

This is good but I think anyone who wants to try this would be doing
themselves a very big favor to do it with a Hydro Pulse.

Curious as to what Dr. Grossan thinks about the 3% hydrogen peroxide though.

He already posted that he doesn't think it is a good idea.

You were asking about my opinion of irrigating with Hydrogen peroxide. In
theory its a good idea, but I don't known whet the effects on the nasal
membranes are and until i do, I can't comfortably recommend it.

I've used the H2O2 maybe 1/2 dz. times. ...I've found that it does cause
some minor (short-term) irritation. Perhaps this is why many are
hesitant to try it.  ....Has it helped me? Well I'd be the last person
to say something worked -- just because everyone else said it did.
...But, yes...Unquestionably, It has helped me.  ...And it's
surprisingly fast acting too.    Has its use eliminated my sinusitis?
No.. Probably surgery would be the only help in that respect.  ...But it
has become another means -- along with irrigation, and flonase --  by
which I can keep my sinusitis under control.    ...Jon

Are you using the peroxide with water or with saline? That makes a difference.
I think its better to use with saline.

..I mix the H2O2 with the saline solution in my irrigator.  ...Rather
than using Cando's "upside down" method of holding it in, I simply turn
the irrigator on a lighter flow, turn my head as much as possible in the
sink (with the nostrils pointing up), then allow the mixture to
continually flush through (takes approx. 11/2 minutes.)  ...I guess it
basically accomplishes the same thing as Cando's method, but with less
hassle.   ...I would think to use the H2O2 on an ongoing basis would be
superfluous.   ...Not only that, but the post discomfort it causes by
irritating the sensitive tissue would be hard to justify as a
replacement to the symptoms of sinusitis.   ...Of course, when I've
irrigated with this solution, I make the mixture quite potent-- right
off the bat.  ..Not the most pleasant experience to undergo; however, I
also use very cold water, which counteracts the burning, to a degree.
..I figure if one is going to irritate the sinuses, might as well make
the solution strong enough to kill a few bacteria off in the process.
..I would suggest, based on my use, the long-term effects are probably
minimal in comparison to some of the horror stories I've read for post
surgical. ...In fact, right now, my sinuses feel clear as a bell.

My concern with using this method (using H2O2) is damage to
the cilia. Any info on the effects on the cilia?  I think that if the
cilia are damaged you could create chronic sinus problems.

Good point, David. ...However, I kind of doubt the cilia are irreparably
damaged. 1) The mixture, although irritating, is actually quite weak.
..Plus, 2) The exposure time is limited.   ...Jon

Just an update:  since my last post, it seems that not even the gentimycyn
is not working.  I've had this awful smell and taste for the last 2 weeks
solid ... no end in sight of it.
so, i made an appointment to see a new ENT dr.  I go on July 9th.  In the
meantime, I called my current ENT's office.  his nurse called in zithromax
again (the first time was with an allergist) for me, except this time, I
have to take 2 packs.  I asked her what shethought it could be again, and
she seems to think some sort of infection that is not going away.  She
said its possible the next time I see him (july 20) he might have to do a
culture.  I just wonder why they never cultured before.  What do they take
a culture of?  maybe one day someone will get to the bottom of it?

ou say the gentamycin didn't work? how are you using it?

murray,

i use a baby bulb and spray it up into my nose then snort it in. i do it
once or twice a day.
ENTconsult - 19 Jun 2004 04:35 GMT
That is probably why the gentamycin didn't clear you, I suspect almost none got
into the sinuses. You should ask your doctor about doing this via pulsatile
irrigation.

murray,

in your opinion, this thing that i am dealing with, is it some sort of
nasty sinus infection that just wont budge?  the nurse practioner for my
current ent has me on a double pack of zithromax, and i just started the
2nd one today.  i;ve notice it feels like there is pressure in my sinuses.
i've also noticed  my bones under my eyes hurt if i press on them.  could
it be some fungus infection?  but if it were a fungus infection, wouldnt
that have show up on my last ct scan from a month ago?  i go see another
ent two weeks from thursday for a 2nd opinon.  i am supposed to go see my
current one on 7/21 and the nurse said he may have to do a culture on me.
what would a culture do?  sorry for so many questions!
ENTconsult - 26 Jun 2004 06:51 GMT
Culture would identify wha the name of the organism is and what he is sensitive
to. If he takes the culture via enodcope tht is best.
