Hello-
About a year ago, out of nowhere, I started experiencing serious nasal
congestion whenever I went to lie down, making sleep difficult, even
though it went away the minute I stood up. As months passed it would
stop altogether, only to come back, stop, ad return. Steroid-based
nasal sprays didn't do anything. At one point, over the course of
about a week it worsened (to the point where it was bothering me
during the day) and as it turned out I had been getting a cold. I got
over the cold and all congestion went away for a week... when I began
experiencing sinus headaches/stuffy nose. For a sinus infection (what
I believed it was) the symptoms were mild and there was no foul, green
discharge, so a week passed before I was put on antibiotics. That was
two weeks ago, and the headaches have subsided somewhat but my nose is
impossibly clogged (it's not confined to one nostril). The mucus
drains entirely through my throat. I have had mild hay fever in the
past, but allegra and singulair haven't provided any relief for my
stuffy nose and I have no other allergic symptoms. I have never had
indoor allergies, and using a non-allergic pillow and frequently
washing the sheets have had no effect. I've been referred to have a CT
scan + see an ENT, but that's weeks (an eternity) in the future.
What's wrong with me? Will the swelling stop? What can ant ENT do to
stop it - I've tried everything?

Jay,
Where do you live? I'm asking because of pollen counts for your
area. It sounds to me like you are suffering from alleries. The
allergies can lead to sinus infection. Are you allergic to Oak
trees ? Or mold? Sounds like you are having an Oak or mold reaction
to me. Do you live near a pond or stagnant water?
You may have seen I posted this a few weeks back, but I'll post
it again because I think it will help you.
The following suggestion my seem odd, but it works ...
Visualize somebody or something you are really mad at, and
then physically throw punches at the image vigorously and
angrily. Do this until you get the anger out and you are
somewhat fatigued. ( A good 30 seconds or so should work. )
Seriously throw the punches and get it out. ( Of course, only
attempt this if you are physically fit enough to do this without
hurting yourself.)
Right after you are done throwing punches and you are resting,
your nose should clear up. If it doesn't, try the punch routine
again. Also, try jumping into the air about 10 times, like you
are trying to dunk a basketball. Your nose should clear for a
bit.
With it cleared up, you should irrigate and/or use nasal spray to
help move the offensive substances out.
Let me know if the jumping or punching cleared it up, even for
a short time.
Good luck.

I agree - it sounds like allergic inflammation, since it comes and goes.
Of course this is extremely common.....

This parallels my recent experience too. I don't have a solution for you
except that the Grossman irrigator provides relief. The ENT took a
5 second gander at my sinus xray and said I have no infection, go see
an allergist. He would not listen that my allergies are so mild (even now)
that I have never needed any kind of treatment. My sinuses only became
a problem last Dec. when I got the flu that was going around. Ever since
then I've had problems. Interestingly, the nurse at the hospital where I
got the CT scan said that many people who got this winter's flu were
also having sinus problems. Of course, that is anecdotal but I think there
may be a connection. I am hopeful that with irrigation and time my body
will be able to overcome whatever is causing the problem and I can get
back to normal.

David

Thanks for the response!!! I got sick in December as well (low grade
fever, sinus headaches, etc., which went away quickly but left a nasty
post-nasal drip for about a month) but I was having problems
beforehand. I'm not sure if my recent bout with this thing is related
the congestion I had lying down earlier - especially since the
headaches came before the stuffy nose. After about a week the
headaches became severe (I felt like throwing up but thankfully
didn't) and they abated after the antibiotics. I was thinking that the
stuffy nose was a byproduct of this, but apparently I was wrong.
Regarding allergies, right now where I live (in the northeast) the
pollen count has peaked but I don't feel particlarly worse outside,
and I was having symptoms even when nothing was out there. I doubt
that it's something really malicious (like mold growth in my bedroom)
since the symptoms actually worsened when I was away from home for a
few days. On the other hand I have had allergies. I was on
antihistamines for ~six weeks last year, but never once felt
miserable.
