all it says in my water-pik manual is that if you use any solutions
other than plain water in it, to rinse the unit out by partially
filling it with warm water and running the warm water thru the unit.

I would get rid of it.
If it hasn't been used for 3 years, it may have so much microbial growth
inside it by now that disinfecting it is impossible.
You can replace the WaterPik and the Grossan tips for maybe $50 or $60.
Don't risk your health for such a small amount of money.
