I have had sinus problems in the past but right now the first thing in the
morning I cough up some yellow stuff. After about an hour I have it all
coughed up. But I have a little cough on into the day some. When I lay down
all the problems goes away and I am very clear. My nose seem to be clear
most of the time. I got a Z-PAK of antibiotic Thursday and I have not seen a
improvement yet. I have not had any of the yellow stuff come from my nose,
all I get is from coughing up. Does this sound like a sinus infection? I had
a chest x-ray also done thursday and it all showed good. I need some advice
please.
Thanks

Jeff, Bet my bottom dollar that yellow stuff is coming down from
your head.I believe gravity plays a role in sinus drainage, perhaps
more in some people than others. When you are laying down thick mucus
is more likely to pool in the sinuses and you really can,t feel it in
there.Mucus can also make it's way into your trachea more easily when
you are asleep.I would suggest drink alot of water and use alot of
saline during the day.Humidify your bedroom if its dry.Decongestants
may help.Irrigating would probably help also and there many
methods.Thining your secretions in combination with antibiotics give a
better chance of curing it.Have you tried Afrin or any other topical
decogestants?

Yes.
In adults suffering from sinusitis, yellow post nasal drip is more
common than yellow mucus when you blow your nose. With children, it's
the reverse.
When you're sleeping, that yellow post nasal drip flows down the back of
your throat into your windpipe. And then when you awaken you cough it
back up again.
If you irrigated your nose out (see the FAQ for how to do this), I'll
bet you would flush out a lot of yellow mucus.

Sinus infections are stubborn. Even if that antibiotic works, you
generally see improvement only after 4 days or so. And Z-PAK is a bad
choice because it only lasts for a week or so. To completely clear a
sinus infection you need to be on antibiotics for at least 2 weeks (and
often longer).
It sounds like your physician doesn't really know how to treat
sinusitis. A physician who knows how to treat sinusitis will prescribe
a couple weeks' worth of antibiotics, and if that fails, order up a CT
scan of your sinuses. If your physician can't or won't do that, then
you might consider going elsewhere.

Yellow stuff being coughed up daily in AM sounds like it is from the chest.
