Getting a cold while healing from FESS: what to do??

Yeesh, definitely getting a cold, greenish stuff, getting congested,
irrigation messing my tubes, feeling sick.

I need to know, if anyone knows, what to do before I can call my ENT's
office tomorrow.  Decongestant or no?  I know I was told to humidify and
moisturize, not dry, but... which is worse, the congestion or the dryness?

Just my luck!  (and Lenny's...).

Just accept it as par for the course.

As I had told you prior to your surgery, the scraping of your sinus
linings by your surgeon damaged the cilia and other natural defenses of
your upper respiratory tract, which left you more vulnerable to
post-operative infections.  That will continue till your nose is
completely healed from the surgery, and the cilia regenerate.

I think you should take no other medications before talking with your
surgeon.  Take only what he tells you.

Irrigation or moisturizing is great because you'll be shedding more
virus that way.  The more you shed, the less remains to spread.   :-)

Will my cilia regenerate after decades of BK laced sprays, you think?

Thanks, called the office this a.m. and was told to use mucolytics,
irrigate, but no drying sprays or decongestants.

Doing it, thanks.  Also got the reassuring information that the giant
clots that've been coming out today on my right side (the bad side) are
really dissolvable packing he'd put up there during surgery.  PHEW,
they're hyooge.

I meant regenerate back to whatever their condition was before you had
the surgery.  Remember, the linings containing the cilia were scraped away.

Yeah.  And to my relief, it turns out that the giant clots I thought I
was irrigating out of my bad side were self dissolving packing gel,
which means there's very little blood or gunk at all, once I account for
that.

I hope Lenny is having a better time of it today.

Thanks for thinking of me, Susan.

I do feel a bit better today.  I've now replaced 2 rounds of the
percocet with the tylenol 3 but there's a difference, that's for
sure.  At least I can stand it now, so the pain is getting better.  I
might switch back later before bed but hoping tomorrow can be the
beginning of the end of for percocet.

I did see the doc and at least he didn't try to revert to the giant
booger theory ;-).  He agrees that I have an infection and he swapped
in Levaquin as my antibiotic.  The thinks the other antibiotic just
didn't squash it all.

As long as I start to get a little better each day.  6 days of no
improvement was frustrating.

Hope you're on track.  That packing seemed to come out earlier for
me.  Most of it went down my throat and into my mouth (yuck).  It was
pretty much gone in a couple of days.

Lenny, Levaquin is the abx my ENT rx'ed, but I chose not to take it due
to potential side effects.  It's very effective for most folks, but I
was doing well with Augmentin XR and chose to stay on it post op.  I'm
so glad you got it, though.

I bet.

I don't seem to be irrigating any more packing after this a.m.  Most of
it seemed to come out yesterday and and this a.m. I still feel an URI
brewing, but am keeping things loose by taking NAC for now, and drinking
plent of water.  I sure was relieved to hear that was what it was, it
was gross.

My sense of smell is significantly better today, too, maybe the two
things are related?

Feel better, Lenny.

I still don't have much of a sense of smell.  Hopefully soon.  My
Boston Terrier has horrible gas tonight (so my wife tells me) so it
can wait another day or so ;-).

On the topic of irrigation, I asked my doc today how many times per
day he thinks I should be doing it and he said 2 is fine.  I have to
say that I have a hard time believing that's enough.  This early on,
anyway.  If you get that bloody gunk on anything you know how
incredibly hard it is to remove.  Takes some serious scrubbing.  I
feel my results from irrigation are good right now and when the doc
gives you the green light to blow (ever so gently) a lot of stuff
comes out of there after irrigation using very, very little force.  It
basically amounts to blowing out the water that's left in there from
the irrigation a bit more forcefully than gravity would do it and, for
me, it greatly increased what comes out.

There's a silver lining for you!

My doc says 4X per day, a really good web site from another ENT I was on
tonight says every hour!  2X per day isn't much, especially when you
have an infection, not to mention surgery with crusts and scabs forming.

I got permission on Monday to blow gently, and just in time, I'd been
dying to.

I don't have water up there after irrigating, only some up hehind my
palate that comes right down when I tip my head back.  My last
irrigation of the night there was basically nothing, no blood, no gunk.

My sinus DR. suggested using a neti pot and Pickling salt in warm water
-the pot comes with a spoon for the salt --It's helped me numerous times
with the green gunk -cleared it

Thanks, Trish.  My doctor has me irrigating 4X per day to clear out the
surgery crud.  The cold never fully developed, but there is some sign of
infected colored stuff from my left side, but maybe that's old gunk.
