LOSS OF SMELL AND TASTE FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE NASAL PROBLEMS

bragaboutme - 11 Aug 2008 03:48 GMT In 1993, I was operated on for sinus problems. Following the surgery, the problems became worse. I had constant infections, was given 3 yrs. of allergy shots. Had downright ain in both nasal cavities and above nose. Voice so nasal could not understand me. I saw a doctor at Ohio State, the x-rays showed my sinus were totally collapsed except for a small hole on each side for air to flow. He spent about 8 weeks, weekly cleaning the infection, and sucking the infection out, while this process was going on I was taking Cipro. Following the surgery, the left sinus seemed to improve, but the right sinus cavity would not heal, and caused constant infections, I was placed on IV therapy for 8 weeks, no result. I see the doctor periodically when I cant flush out major hunks. He is abe to clean it. The right side is full of scarred tissue, and consequently no protection from airborne infections. Perodically, my right nasal side will suddenly swell and become painful. I had been on Motrin 800 my for years. I developed Diabetes Type II, the doctors switched to Vicodin to use as needed for pain to protect my kidneys. In the operation of 200, they went through my lip and up to sunuses, removed a turbinate. The problem goes on, but I begin to notice a loss of smell and taste , but it was intermediate, now that problem had become permanent. The doctor is aware of it, I flunk all smell taste tests. The only thing I can tell the difference between is sugar and salt. My worry is this related to sinus of IS IT A POSSIBLE BRAIN TUMOR. I have no signs of neurological issues, my life has been plagues by sinus problem since 1993, the scarred tissue is permanent, nothing more can be done for me, except to clear up infections. I have a tool they gave me to help debre my nose, but often I cannot get deep enough to remove the collection of residue from the air that I breathe. Can any one tell me more about total loss of taste and smell? Is it another problem(brain), or an extension of sinus issue.

The olfactory hairs descend into the sinuses. If they are gummed up, one can not smell.

Could you explain the olfactory hairs, and their relation to taste/smell. As I stated in the long post I wrote, I have been to the Cleveland Clinic, they simply told that since one of my turbinates had been removed, that only increased exposure of scarred tissue and infection. I have repeatedly mention to doctor that my smell and taste was diminished(I would fail all smell taste), but it has only been in the 6-7 weeks that the smell and taste has pretty well vanished. At times I will have hints of taste, but it is fleeting. Just curious how much I should pressure this doc. He is the Assoc. Professor in this field.

The structrure of this system is why I have concluded most people with chronic sinusitis must have pretty good immune system, otherwise infection travels up the olfactory hairs into the brain. And this DOES happen. Also in sequential PET scans of people developing Altzheimer's this is one of the first affected areas, and the bugs produce soluible amyloid as parrt of their attachment stradgey. Which is what makes me think that the at least some Altzheimer's has an infectious etiology.

I saw the ENT DOC, and just laid it all out. They gave me the smell/taste test, and naturally I failed it. I had thought my sinus's were in pretty good shape(in that they didnt seem to be clogged or causing pain). However, he went in with endoscope, they were both a solid mess, way beyond where I could get. That had never happened before. He cleamed them, but had to go up, high which was hard. I also had an ulcer on vocal chord. He gave me bactroban in sodium solution, and Pantroprazole. Want to see me again in 3 weeks. He mentioned X-Rays or MRI, but I have the problem for so long, if it was involving something(ie tumor) ir would have progressed in the last 5 yrs. At least thats what he told me. This doc, is Associate Professor at major University Medical school-- you would think he would explain what's going on. I do appreciate your help. Went I went in to see him, I felt more knowledgeable, and determined. Steven L. - 11 Aug 2008 05:53 GMT > In 1993, I was operated on for sinus problems. I strongly suggest you go to a good interdisciplinary teaching hospital, like the Mayo Clinic. You need help from a team of specialists who can stabilize your condition.
You're way past asking for advice from the Internet.

The docs are on salary, and they are rated by their outcomes.

I am really sorry to hear about your troubles. I have had some sinus problems but yours are a whole lot worse. Out in Denver, we have National Jewish Hospital. They specilize in respiratory problems. Maybe this as an alternate to the Mayo depending where they will see you Fred

Pecan center membranes helped. Using pepcid complete or tums as a lozenge to pull the goo out helped. A long pipette and turbinfina helped. Chewing fresh garlic mustard helped an hour at a time. helped. Raw Mustard greens help Omeprazole helped. Cuckleburr leaves helped. (I don't swallow them I chew and spit. ) I have a standing script for intraconazole, and it is seriously good medicine when I don't have time to go pick fresh. But the fresh plants are most effective and very inexpensive. And though I still have some goo, after weeks of treatment our of GrandDad's herbal, I have cut it's kingdom to a quarter of what it was. I can taste and smell. Maybe it has something to do with the chlorophyll.
