Clogged Nasolacrimal Ducts

I recently was examined by an ENT Doc that I had seen several years ago with
the same complaint.  He was not very encouraging about my clogged nasal
passages but did note that a polyp was blocking my right sinus. I have
learned to live with breathing through my mouth.  The Rx for Nasacort was
his only help but my hmo will not pay the high price for this med and from
previous experience with using it I never got good results.  In the course
of talking to him I asked about a procedure that can clean out the tear
ducts. I was interested in this because when my eyes tear up the tears go
down my cheeks instead of into my nasal passages. I have the opinion that if
lacrimal fluid could pour into my sinuses it would help to clear them.   He
told me that only an ophthalmologist would undertake this procedure.  I am
curious to know if others have this problem and if they have ever had the
procedure done.  Thanks.

I have not heard of such a procedure.

But remember that the tear ducts drain into the nose.  If your nose is
stuffy, the tear ducts will have trouble draining into it.  (My eyes
frequently tear up when my sinuses act up.)  You might get relief from
your eyes if your nasal stuffiness could be relieved.

If your ENT is allowing you to live as a mouth-breather, go find another
ENT.  You shouldn't have to live that way.  If the worst comes to the
worst, surgery can really open up your nasal passages.  The polyp can be
removed easily.

I had a period in the early 80's where the duct between my eyes and
nose became inflammed.  this caused me to have a bug -eyed look
because it took so much strain just to communicate.  This really
messed up my non-verbal communication cause you are not giving off the
right signals when you are looking at someone with a wide open eyed
look and you are in discomfort.  The drug that gave me relief was a
nasal steroid that was able to get into the duct, reduce the
inflammation, and give me releif.  The inflammation also went into the
lower orbital giving me blurrred and double vision.
