Acid Reflux/Sinusitis: Chicken or the egg?

I've seen this discussion here quite a few times and I'm wondering if
we've come any closer to understanding the relationship between these
two diseases.  I'm leaning towards believing that acid reflux is
causing my sinus problems.

I've had pretty strong reflux episodes the last couple of weeks,
leading to heartburn, bad breath and a sore throat.  The last couple
of days, I've waken up with my throat feeling like I've swallowed
razors.  And all today, I've been sneezing like mad, feeling run down
and generally feel like I have the flu.  I think enough of the
refluxing reach my respiratory area and is causing traditional
'respiratory' problems....but it all started with acid reflux.

Does that make sense?  To me it makes more sense than sinusitis
causing acid reflux the last couple of weeks and now I'm finally
feeling the full respiratory symptoms?

Or is there a lack of causation and it's all just a coincidence?

I have profound burning pain next just above and to the right of my
sternum if I do not treat my sinusitis.
I have found that both tend to clear up  when I am taking
clyndiamycian, and it clears up faster if i also take prilosec with
it.
Clyndiamycian is a pretty broad spectrum antibiotic, and the
combination of opramazole and clyndiamycian is prescribed for h
pylori. Staph and mycobacteria and e-coli are all affected by it
bacause it interfers with biofilm formation, so the fact that my
condition responds to it does not identify the agent, only makes it
likely that it is bacterially caused. And the fact that Texas Pete hot
sauce, orange juice and vitamin C make it better also tends to
indicate that direction. (Recent lab tests identified staph with the
same sensitivity profile vs antibiotics as stuff I have had for at
least 8 years. It is sensitive to everything other than penicillin. If
it were not protected, it would be dead. )

But if you think that you may have some other cause of acid reflux,
then treat it as acid reflux due to allergy or something is the cause,
and see if it gets better.
Pepto bismol is a good bet because it treats acid and the bugs mistake
bismuth for some other metal that they need, so it has antibacterial
properties.
If treating the reflux as the problem does not work, then treat it as
a sinus infection.

I've been taking Gaviscon the last couple of day and while the acid
reflux symptoms did not worsen, my respiratory ones went down the
drain.  Maybe I do not react well to Gaviscon.  Will try the pepto.  I
had to leave the office today w/o finishing my work because I have
full on "sick" symptoms.  Sneezing, watery eyes, congestion, runny
nose, etc.  It all happened within  a few hours in the office.

I did go to a GI doctor two years ago and according to the all tests
conducted, I'm "normal" when it comes to acid reflux.  Two ENTs
diagnosed me with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux.  5 months of treating LPR
didn't really alleviate the symptoms.  My symptoms improved really
when I finished grad school. But then again, ENTS couldn't find any
infection or serious signs of sinusitis either.  Just irritated vocal
cords and inflammation in my nasal passage.  I do saline washes
daily.

Generally I'm leaning towards acid reflux as my symptoms tend to
correspond to my tummy. When it's empty, after eating, late in the
evening, etc.

I know my ENT has gradually come around to the notion that reflux can
cause chronic sinusitis in adults.  (In medical school they still teach
that this happens only with small children.)  He has seen adult patients
improve their sinusitis dramatically after having the Nissen
fundoplication procedure to tighten their esophageal sphincters.  (He
has NOT seen similar improvement with anti-acid medication, suggesting
that it's the physical contents of the stomach, not its pH, that's the
culprit.)

What can I say?  It's one more theory of chronic sinusitis, along with
the other six dozen theories we've heard.

BTW, sinusitis that causes infected post nasal drip that is swallowed
can cause stomach upset and reflux, so it works both ways.

I have to sleep on my left side with a wedge pillow. Then I do not have
that relux when I wake up in the mornings.. I can do without Prilosec
for it which my MD recommened me to take.

I keep away from acidic foods before bedtime.

You sound fortunate enough to have a mild version of acid reflux.
Mine doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason and I'm leaning towards
the theory that it is stress-related.

Well, a week later, the symptoms have settled down but unfortunately,
I suspect a sinus infection.  No discoloration, but I'm getting the
classic signs of upset stomach, nausea, PND and tiredness.  I'm
getting a terrible odor/breath, but I can't figure out if it's from
the acid reflux or from an infection.  The kicker is that I'm flying
internationally in less than 2 weeks and I realy have to get this
under control.

So another ENT appointment this Friday....I'm going to ask for another
comprehensive look from the ENT because it's been 3 years and neither
G.I nor ENT doctors have been able to tell me what my problem is.  So
one more check up from the ENT.  Then I'm going back to the G.I world
and ask them to check me out for GERD/LPR.

All advice/suggestions on how I can systemically approach this and
figure it out are welcomed.
