bloody nose...

It's been about a week that i've been off the antibiotics. I'm still
irrigating with the neti pot (salt, baking soda, glycerin) 2-3 times a
day.  I stopped using my nasonex for a couple of days thinking that
was doing it.  Now when i blow my nose I will have about 4-5 tissues
of bloody snot.  If i just stick the edge of the tissue in my nose it
is covered in blood.  I believe it is coming from my nostrils....but
not sure

At what point do i worry about it?  I have had sinus pain but not
really a headache since i've been off the omnicef.  I also run two
humidifiers

thanks

If you want your chronic nosebleed to get better, you must stop blowing
your nose.  Or else blow it VERY gently, little more than breathing out
hard from your nose.  Every time you blow hard you're blowing the clot
out again.  If blood is oozing out, just dab at your nose with a clean
tissue.  Don't blow it out.

There is some stuff that you can get some Ayr nasal gel.  It will keep
your sinus membranes moistened.  This should aid in healing.

Some of the nasal rinses or nose drops have Benza.. in it and that
causes me to have nose bleeds.

I use Ayr which does not have it in, and no more nose bleeds. I just use
a tissue to absorb it, not blowing it out.

A nose bleed means that something is creating, or has created a wound
that has not been allowed to heal.
I am not sure that blood is not a positive sign, because that is what
comes out after if the yellow mat detaches suddenly.

Michael's tea wash is astringent, antibacterial, mild and
nonirritating.
4 bags of black tea to a cup,  plus 1/8 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp lemon juice,
4 packets of splenda.

Steroid sprays also cause skin and mucosal atrophy, the skin is much
more fragile and bleeds easily when blowing the nose.

Incidentally, it's very common for me and other Cushing's patients to
have RBCs, pus and epithelial cells in urine without infection for this
reason.

Well, i'm doing my best to only blow my nose after irrigating or when
i've used several sprays of saline.  It is when it is dry that I had
been blowing more or harder.   I've always had a bloody nose or snot
to some degree just because of the winter and dry air. I use my
nasonex at night because it helps alleviate some of the swelling/
puffiness and congestion in the morning.

Hi :-)

Jonny One-Note here!

Nasonex is preserved with Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC).

BKC is /known/ to be Drano (drain cleaner) for the sinuses.  By that,
I do NOT mean "clears out the pipes."  I do, however, mean caustic and
harmful.

Here's one quick article -- first that came up on a Google:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6WP4-481F7XF-B&_user=1
0&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVers
ion=0&_userid=10&md5=a5901bf765cc79cfd58eadbf0770bf44

OR: http://tinyurl.com/2fhqvk

BKC has a well-documented history (decades) of causing significant
harm to eyes and sinuses.  Because dry eyes or problem sinuses do NOT
function the same as normal ones (eg, aren't as wet), the
concentration of BKC on the cells is even higher.

If it were me .... I'd talk about this -- and your current symptoms --
with your doctor.  Your sinuses sound like they're in pretty bad
shape.  If it were me, that would make me even MORE likely to avoid
BKC.

Best of luck!

Is there one without the BKC?  nasonex was given to me because it is
supposed to be less irritating.  Doc gave me a sample of flonase a few
years ago and it was almost an instant nose bleed. Compared to others
I dont' think i'm in that bad of shape.. or maybe i've just become
accustomed to it?

Only Rhinocort that I know of.

But you should not be relying on steady use of any steroid, inhaled or
otherwise.  A.m. only, every other day usage could help preserve your
HPA axis function.

Rhinocort didn't work as well for me.. but i used it in the morning.
If i take decongestants too late in the day, i can't sleep

Love my massage therapist! She has worked on my sinuses before but i
got a lot of relief and drainage after my session last night. I wasn't
as congested this morning and i didn't use my nasonex.

If you are having bleeding from the nose, any cortisone spray will increase
that bleeding by thinning the mucosa.

I haven't used it in 3 days.  Which in turn causes me to wake up
congested, swollen, fatigued :o(  I do have a little bottle of Xlear..
it helps along with irrigation. This morning i thought i had a glob of
mucous coming down   and when i *gently* blew my nose it was a scab/
clot. I will probably call the doctor tomorrow or monday.  I can't
take entex pse 24/7 and sleep, or afford more visits to the LMT.

My MD gave me a prescription for Nasacort as I told him Claritin did not
seem to be helping me anymore. I was having sinus problems too.

Nightime is the worst time to use any kind of steroid.  Use at night
suppresses your HPA axis for 24 hours, use in the a.m. suppresses for 12
hours.

Maybe you could use a decongestant at night?
