I know that I hold my head all the way back when I irrigate. My
sinuses take on a full load of saline solution and then I clean
everything out. I know that when I was younger, you could really see
the line on my face where just below was the duct that went between my
eyes and my nose. That duct use to become so inflammed..........
Sometimes, my eyes would just blurr because my lower orbitals were so
inflammed and I was in so much discomfort. This was in the early
80s. There was no internet then and I just ketp on going from doctor
to doctor to doctor. I became older and learned a lot through trial
and error. The sinuses now work. I compare the discomfort that I had
to a Chinese water torture. It just slowly drives you mad. I read an
article about the anxiety/stress problems of people who have empty
nose syndrome. I guess there is anxiety/stress with anyone who has
severe sinus problems. Years of sleep apnea conditions and waking up
with an entire nostril closed. I guess now the main thing I have to
live with is a lot of Post Nasal Drip. I can live with that as long
as my sinuses keep running and my passages are mostly open.

unless i have a bad cold, I can always breathe thru my nostrils.
Rarely are they blocked. .even with this latest sinus infection.
Guess i'm fortunate. I have the post nasal drip/gunk feeling in the
back/top of my throat.. but even that is getting better with irrigating

I've read that it's best to keep your face directly downward, without
leaning to either side, to prevent water from seeping into the
Eustation Tube... I think this was actually included in the directions
for my pustile irrigation device (Dr. Grossen's). Anyone know whether
this is accurate?

That is correct. You want the fluid to flow past the sinus openings in order
to get the Bernoulli vacuum effect of draining the sinuses. You bow to the
sink so that you can see the drain. That keeps the saline from going down
your throat. If you tilt to the side, you lay your eustachian tube opening
in a dependent position and the saline could pool there. You shouldn't
swallow either at that can open the tube.
Interestingly some patients clear their fluid in the middle ear by pulsatile
irrigation - you get the same vacuum effect as the saline flows past the
openings.
