eustation tube blockage

TLB - 24 Feb 2008 15:45 GMT I haven't had a sinus infection since August, which is a record for me. This past week, however, I got hit with the flu, which in turn, triggered a nasty sinus infection. The aches and sore throat went away, but the sinus infection remained. I had both blood and mucus coming out of my nose. This is the first time I've have any dried blood with the mucus since my surgery two years ago. I went to a first care center, and the doctor gave me a ten-day course of amoxicylin.
The only problem I have now is a plugged eustachian tube. It feels like I have cotton stuffed in my left ear. So far, I've tried a decongestant, breathing in steam, holding my nose and blowing, and chewing gum in an effort to get my ear to "pop" so that I can hear clearly again.
Any other suggestions?

You've tried all of my suggestions: in my experience, the clogged ear doesn't go away until the swelling from the infection settles down. How long have you been on the antibiotics? I actually find it counter productive to try to blow open a blocked eustachian tube from infection, as it seems to push the infection up into it. I do irrigate with a neti pot, but avoid the positive pressure methods, like the neilmed squeeze bottle (per their instructions.) Judy

I'm feeling much better in my sinuses, but the ear thing is driving me crazy. I'll probably have to wait a couple more days to see if there is any improvement.
I have a Nazaline syringe that I use, but if I have to irrigate, I'll do it very slowly. However, I don't normally use it when I have an infection flare up, as it tends to spread it around and make things worse.

Oh, well, you won't see improvement in your ear for two or three days yet, even if the antibiotic works. It takes that long for enough of it to reach the sinuses.
Be patient. Close your eyes and think of warm summer!

Last Wednesday, I ventured out for a 90 minute walk on a misty day, feeling fine, and well dressed for the weather.
On returning, though, I had horrible chills and was freezing and sweating simultaneously. Hm. Temp? 104.
This morning was the first sub-100F reading since then, mostly staying above 102 despite regular ibuprofen.
Of course, mine migrated right to sinuses and to lungs. Friday, I put myself on 500mg tid of Amoxi, too.
I just think this is a bad, bad flu (that the epidemiologists rather missed this time around) that -- for those of us with other issues -- can take us down in a hurry.
After day three of the amoxi, my sinuses are starting to improve, but my lungs are lagging behind.
I'm also trying to sneak in probiotics (empty stomach) as much as I can. I've heard from more than a few docs, in the last few months, who subscribe to the notion of the "healthy balance of intestinal flora" as critical to a functional immune system.
Best of luck ... and feel better soon.
BTW: if you got "THE" flu, here's some info on it:

It ab-so-lute-ly kicked my butt :-(

I do everything I can not to catch it... They totally blew the vaccine this year, and with the complete revamp next year, they're now anticipating possible shortages. It's a little pandemic this year. Feel better. The true flu is a serious illness. Judy

Day six for me. While the fever may have broken, the cough is a nightmare. I've turned to codeine to calm it a bit.
Sadly, my wife--away for a few days for work--came home only o have her legendary immune system let this one get by. She's on day two of pretty much the same thing, including the (in her case) 103 fever.
We're a lovely couple right now.
The sad thing is: with a/our subclass deficiency, we're probably vaccination candidates, generally, but ... I'm not too big on vaccines these days ;-)
'Scuse me. Back to bed now.....

The infection seems to have cleared up. I have three more days left on the antibiotic. I still, however, have the blockage in my ears. Blowing my nose is a dreadful task.
I need to find a spa/health club that will let me use their sauna/steam room (which is better, BTW?) without having to buy a one-year membership.

Okay first try sniffing rather than blowing. Your sinuses have what is called in the boiler business a dead head. The air path takes a 90 degree turn from your windpipe going into your sinuses, and the sinuses void is shaped something like an upside down golf wood with no opening at the top but rather around at tip of the club. Bottom line there is a good chance of driving mucus into your e tube as well as out of your nose if you blow.
To get the mucus to let loose so that you can sniff it out try holding a couple of packets on any artificial sweetener in you mouth. Splenda works very well. Hold, sniff and spit. The crud likes sweets, artificial sweeteners seem to puzzle it and it will let go to latch on to them. Your estation tubes empty into the back of your throat, what you put in your mouth diffuses into your e tubes.
Another thing that works the same way is pepto bismol tablets. I think the crud tries to use the bismuth as in place of iron. It will also turn your stool black, so be prepared.
Strong tannins seem to srink or hydrolyze the mucus, I would recommend that you hold a center membrane from between the nutmeats of a pecan in your mouth to experience this effect. Or make a VERY strong 4 bag cup of black tea with a bit of lemon and several packets of the articical sweetener of your choice and hold that in you mouth for a few minutes before sniffing and spitting the crud out.
Happy hearing.

Almost any gym will sell you a day pass. The only question is how hard they'll work to sign you up while you're there ;-)
For what you're after, I'd recommend steam (wet heat) 10 to 1 over the sauna (dry heat).
I'm a big believer in that as a therapeutic AND palliative (feels good) treatment. Sadly, I haven't made it out of Ye Olde House once since this all started.
Glad you're on the mend!
