CT scan for sinus + radiation

Does one get a high dose of radiation from a sinus CT scan? Since it
is concentrated in a small area of the body, would multiple CT scans
be much worse than having other multiple x-rays such as chest x-rays?

When I was doing research for my kidney stone catscan, I found the
dosage for a sinus catscan is the equivalent of up to 200 chest x-rays.
...The "experts" will tell you that such a catscan will not damage
your cellular DNA. ...You'd need about 200 of these for noticeable
changes to show up.    ...However, then they turn around with the next
breath and say: If one doesn't "really" need an x-ray (of any kind),
then he should avoid having it.

There are arguements on both sides. The one most often used is that the
dosage is the equivalent of "X" no. of months of normal background
radiation.   ...However, one must keep in mind that they're trying to
compare an exposure based over a year (or more), and then compressing it
down into a few seconds.

X-rays of any kind are dangerous... As is an over exposure to the sun.
You'll have to weigh the risks yourself, based on your current
condition. ...Unfortunately, catscans are about the only way for Drs to
get a good idea as to what condition your sinuses are in.

Right now I'm dealing with my Urologist who phoned and wanted me to
have another catscan for my remaining kidney stone.   Had I listened to
him and the other Drs without objection, I would have been exposed to 4
abdomen catscans; a regular abdomen x-ray, and an IVP, all within a few
months.    ...And rest assured: The Drs could careless if you look like
the death-bed Tammy Fay, 10 years down the road.     ..They'll come back
with an excuse like: "Well he shouldn't have smoked when he was
younger."   ...Jon

A sinus CT scan is particularly problematic because you're having your
brain irradiated.

My ENT has limited me to one sinus CT scan per year, maximum.  As it is,
I've taken an awful lot of radiation to my brain by now, with all the CT
scans I've had since the 1990's.

Just one more thing to worry about.

According to the experts (with my kidney stone dilemma), they consider
the radiation dosage from having one catscan done per year, to be
negligible.   ...However,  when we see that giant-sized mutant Steven
(with the glowing head) terrorizing Tokyo, then we'll all start to
worry.

Back in the early 60s, the forestry department where I lived, sprayed
the surrounding forest with agent orange, in an attempt to kill the
alder trees growing there.  ...The air was just thick with the smell of
that crap.  ...I'll never forget it.  They even sprayed it over the
people playing softball in the local field.    ...And now I'm afflicted
with various maladies, including sinus problems.  ...Could there be a
link?   Who knows?     ...Unfortunately, we can't turn back the clock.

Billee Shoecraft died in 1977 of cancer. She began suffering from cancer
after a helicopter sprayed her with the defoliant Kuron. Before her
death, Shoecraft wrote a book about her experience in which she said
that after she was sprayed her eyes were nearly swollen shut, her arms
and legs were swollen twice normal size and her hair was coming out in
patches. Kuron, an herbicide related to Agent Orange, was sprayed by the
U.S. Forest Service to thin foliage and increase water runoff in the
Pinal Mountains of the Tonto National Forest near Globe, Arizona, in
1968 and 1969. Dow Chemical Company and the U.S.Forest Service paid an
undisclosed sum to five families. Shoecraft wrote a book entitled, Sue
the Bastards!, about her incident in 1971.

40 years ago, everyone was so trusting that the "authorities" would do
whatever it could to keep us from harm. ..Go figure...  This defoliant
spraying was approved by the British Columbia Gov. --forestry dept.

...But heck, when I was a kid, we used to play around hydro
transformers (with their lids removed); We all had mouths full of
mercury fillings; we used to play with big hunks of liquid mercury at
school; all our buildings were covered inside and out with lead based
paint -- and various types of asbestos products; we were inoculated with
polio vaccines that had something or another to do with a monkey cancer
virus; we used to fish at our dock where the water had a permanent oil
slick on it; we had a light plant in our school, whose exhaust was
sucked in via the hot air furnace -- damn near killed everyone in the
school; our drinking water had mosquito larvae floating in it from time
to time, but we never boiled it; we could tell when the salmon were
running in the river, 'cause you could smell the rot in your drinking
glass from their decomposing bodies; we never, ever gave it a thought as
to how well our burgers were cooked in the local restaurants.

..I tell, you... I'm surprised that any of us even made it to
adulthood. ...Unfortunately, now the world has gone off the deep end in
the other direction.  Sort of like the "Twilight Zone" in reverse...
Only with the cold war paranoia being replaced by environmental, and
personal health fears.   ...We're all becoming:  Al-gorized.

We're almost at the point now where we don't even dare light a campfire,
less the world collapse in on itself from the smoke pollution.  ...Gone
are the days where you couldn't smoke within 15 feet of a gas pump...
Now, you have to basically go across the street -- And they're even
trying to ban that  (--as they pass the joint around)..  .... Further...
You can't buy a piece of meat any more, to save your life that has even
so much as an 1/8 of an inch of fat showing on it.  Moreover, given the
power of the minority, I foresee all meat products will be banned for
our use anyways, within the next 50 years -- just lke smoking was.
..All our food is fortified with various elements, vitamins and
antibiotics, to keep us from ever getting sick -- and if you prefer the
normal (organic?) stuff, then you pay through the nose for it.
..Further...  You don't dare go out in the sun any more, as you're
guaranteed to get skin cancer, within 10 minutes..

I tell you...  I think if "The War of the Worlds" ever came to pass,
we'd probably die from our own diseases before the aliens...  God help
us if our kids should ever get the cold or a flu today.  (You know:
those awful immunity builders)

So what is my point?  Well...  40 years from now, what will they be
saying about the currently "deemed to be safe" catscans?  ...Or how
about the "currently deemed to be safe" radiation from cell phones?
Irradiated foods? Fumes given off from various manufactured plastics?
Nitrites and nitrates? Air-tight buildings? The exhaust given off from
vehicles deemed environmentally friendly?

Personally... I don't think the world is really getting any safer than
what it was when I was a kid.. We just haven't realized the current
dangers yet.     ...Jon
