My mucus flow is down considerably. The chemicals are working.
Ipratropium Bromide is acting as a great drying agent and vasonasal
dialator. I have brought the flow down to about 75% to 80% of its
previous flow. My stomach feels a lot better since I am not
swallowing the non ending gobs of mucus. I am sitting in front of the
computer this morning and the dripppings from my nose are not dripping
to the floor or to my mouth. I have not had to use 5 tissues to blow
my nose this morning. Since the mucus flow has decreased, I am again
developing some crusting on the roof of the nasal cavity. This is
easily washed out with a nasal lavage. This is the most normal my
nasal pasage has been for over 40 years. I have also had to use
Alibuterol in an aspirator to stem the mucus flow from my lungs. The
"Magic bullit" seems to be medications that act on the smooth muscle
and blood vessels of the nasal passages and in the bronchial tubes. I
am, in no way, cured. I just seem to be able to live more
comfortabley with my body.
Hey, Fred???
"The active ingredient in ATROVENT HFA Inhalation Aerosol is
ipratropium bromide. It is an anticholinergic bronchodilator
chemically described as 8-Azoniabicyclo [3.2.1] octane, 3-(3-hydroxy-1-
oxo-2-phenylpropoxy)-8-methyl-8-(1-methylethyl)-, bromide,
monohydrate, (endo, syn ): a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound,
chemically related to atropine."
Quaternary ammonium compounds.
That's the category in which preservatives like Benzalkonium Chloride
live. It's the same category of drug that GIVES RISE TO the "don't
use nose spray for more than 4 or 5 days" caveat.
I'm simply not in the position to do the research at the moment (not
when the Mayo is pushing hard for me to do 4 wks or IV steroids for
something where they have ZERO efficacy data, that is....), but ... if
it were me .... I'd look and think long and hard before I hung my hat
on this one for too long.
BAK DEFINITELY is toxic to mucous membranes. I'd be awfully hesitant
to assume that Ipratropium bromide is NOT.
My eyes (and, it's presumed, my sinuses) are irreparably damaged from
long-term use of eye drops preserved with a quaternary ammonium
(obviously, what goes in the eyes, gets in the sinuses). I learned a
lot about this one the hard way. I would hate for the same to happen
to you.
In the beginning, my sense of relief from my particular (really
elusive and disabling) eye problem was similar to yours, but ... over
time ... I paid an incalculable price.
Do some research. Seriously.

O.K. I will check more into it. I used to have some serious problems
with the duct between my eyes and my nose. They would become inflamed
and I would have a "bug eyed look". This was because the pressure/
irritation in these ducts was so overbearing. This was in the early
80's when smoking was still allowed in work places. I slowly got my
sinuses cleaner and the bug eyed look slowly went away. I can only
compare it to Chinese water torture.
