\Trish, a high white cell count certainly can be an indicator of chronic
infection. I recently read that it can also be a marker for adrenal
disorders, but I don't have a citation handy.

Oddly enough, like most things hormone related, both things could be
true. I don't know what your endocrine status is, but high cortisol,
for instance, suppressed immunity in a lot of folks, and my sister has
low counts. I have run from very high to low normal, but I also have
chronic infections.

The use of steroids has been shown to raise white blood cell count in
some cases. So both an adrenal insufficiency and a high white blood
cell count can both be side effects of steroids.
