I was grateful when the sinuses around my eyes opened and drained, but
then I went through 48 hours of fever, chills, and sore throat.

Could the two be related?  I know that it's possible to harbor strep and
staph in your sinuses for long periods, but it seems bizarre that
opening a sinus could make me so ill for so long.

Fever might be a good thing.  If the sinus drainage caused increased
circulation which is causing your body to fight the infection.

That's why moderate exercise can help get things moving and stimulate the
immune system.

Just a guess, I've been wrong before.
