Netti-Pot made things worse

I don't know what (if anything) I'm doing wrong.

I tried the Netti-pot. Each time there was no difficulty using it. The fluid
went in one nostril and easily out the other. Not a lot of gook came
out--pretty clear, which I expected. It felt fine doing it, but:

1) After the first time, severe headache that lasted about 4 hours. Tylenol
finally knocked it out and next morning the headache was gone.

2) After the second time, the infection seemed to spread higher up (usually
I get post nasal drip, sore throat, fatigue, etc.). This time sinuses hurt
like hell, felt raw, sneezing, and just overall misery like those
commercials for the common cold. That has lasted for 3 days and while better
it is still not right.

Question: I am almost ready to give up irrigation (the Grossan thingy never
really seemed to help; I do have the NeilMed on order so I might try that).
For the netti-pot (made by Neil-Med) I was using their solution. Somebody
here posted that it was too harsh. It didn't feel harsh while using it, but
is it possible that the mix is what's causing my problems? If so, any
suggestions on some simple solution to try.

Just in case you have hard water, try using distilled.  If it's the
solution mix, try adding a pinch of baking soda to it.  If you're using
tap water, try sterilizing and cooling first.

Sorry you're having such a bad time with it.

You have to keep in mind that none of these devices offer a cure.
..I've been fortunate in that for the most part the irrigation regimen
has kept my sinusitis managable.  ...However, even last night, I too
suffered from a major sinus headache in my frontals that I think was due
in part to the recent weather change.

What you want to do is avoid things which may provoke a flair-up:
catching a cold; blowing the nose too hard; being around things you know
you're allergic to .   (I think in my case, MSG, wine, and perhaps
chocolate may cause my sinus tissue near the opeings to swell, and thus
cut-off the drainage -- then I get the pain, or frontal head-ache, and
possible infection)

The irrigation process itself may not open up the drainage holes, but I
think it helps to keep the exterior area clear once the inflamation has
passed. In other words, it's a tool to help the body help itself.
..Jon
